Hawkeyes to Travel to West Lafayette, Indiana

The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team travels to West Lafayette, Indiana, for a Big Ten Conference dual against Purdue on Friday.  The competition will be held at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center beginning at 4 p.m. (CT).

Senior Addison Boschult finished with a career-best performance in Iowa’s dual competition against Minnesota on Oct. 30.  The Omaha, Nebraska, native posted a career-best score of 327.38 on the 1-meter springboard.  The total is the eighth-best in program history.

Redshirt freshman Kenneth Mende dazzled in his UI debut Oct. 30 against Minnesota. The Germany native swam to two wins and a runner-up finish.  Mende won the 200 backstroke in 1:49.37 and was the runner-up in the 100 back (49.00).  He also led off the winning 400-medley relay, where he had a split of 48.84 — the eighth-fastest time in program history.  The time currently ranks 25th nationally.

Four Hawkeye divers have posted NCAA Zone diving standards in the first two meets of the 2015-16 season.  Addison Boschult (327.38), Will Brenner (306.15), Brandis Heffner (301.73), and Andrew Hull (301.20) have posted qualifying scores off the 1-meter, while Hull (340.80), Heffner (336.00), and Boschult (333.60) have scores on the 3-meter.

Sophomore Jerzy Twarowski flew fast in Iowa’s Oct. 30 meet against Minnesota.  The Krakow, Poland, native swam an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 48.04 in the 100 fly and posted a second win in the 200 fly, finishing in 1:48.28.  Twarowski’s 100 fly time currently ranks 16th-fastest nationally and his 200 fly is 24th.

Iowa’s 400-medley relay currently has the fifth-fastest time in the nation early in the 2015-16 season.  The quartet of Kenneth Mende, Roman Trussov, Jerzy Twarowski, and Jack Smith posted a time of 3:15.96 in a dual meet against Minnesota.

Freshmen Drew Eisen and Ben Colin have helped to lead the Hawkeyes in distance freestyle events this season. Eisen was runner-up in the 1,650 free, finishing with a time of 16:05.22 against Minnesota, while Colin was the team’s top finisher in the 500, swimming to a runner-up showing in 4:37.28.  Both times are team-bests this season.

Freshman Jack Smith sprinted to his fourth individual win of the season in Iowa’s dual meet against No. 20 Minnesota.  The England native tied for the top time in the 100 free (45.29) and placed third in the 200 free (1:40.72).  Smith is leading the team in the 100 and 200 free, while ranking third on the squad in the 50 free (20.79).

The Hawkeyes return Roman Trussov Mike Nelson, Jerzy Twarowski and Addison Boschult from the NCAA Championships this season. Trussov placed 18th in the 200 medley relay (1:26.19), 19th in the 400-medley relay (3:10.03), 24th in the 100 breast (53.17), and 28th in the 200 breast (1:55.04), Nelson served as an alternate in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, Twarowski finished 18th in the 200-medley relay (1:26.19) and 19th in the 400-medley relay (3:10.03), and Boschult placed 10th at the NCAA Championships with a score of 386.50 and was second overall off the platform at NCAA Zone D Diving Championships (387.70).

Senior Roman Trussov returns for his senior season as a two-time NCAA qualifier (2013, 2015). The Kazakhstan native holds the school records in the 100 breast (52.85), 200 breast (1:54.57) and as part of the 200 (1:25.53) and 400 (3:08.56) medley relays. Trussov placed 24th overall in the 100 breast and 28th in the 200 breast at the 2015 NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Jerzy Twarowski is back for his second season as a Hawkeye and his second season competing in the yards distances. Twarowski became the first Iowa butterfly swimmer to break the 47-second mark during his first collegiate season, posting a school-record time of 46.70. He also broke a 22-year old school record (Rafal Szukala) in the 200 fly, finishing with a time of 1:44.00.

Ground was broken for the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in October 2007. The facility opened in August 2010 and is home for the Hawkeyes. It is located at the corner of Burlington and Madison streets and cost approximately $69 million. The facility includes a 50-meter competition pool, a separate diving well, a leisure pool with lap lanes and 24,000 square feet of fitness space.

Iowa was one of the first schools in the nation to compete on a collegiate level and competed at the first NCAA Championship. From 1937 to 1960, Iowa placed in the NCAA top 10 18 times, crowning nine NCAA and 22 Big Ten champions.

Iowa will return to the pool from Dec. 4-6, hosting the Hawkeye Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. It is the team’s first championship-style meet of the season.
