Villanova Prepares for Big East/Big 10 Quad Meet

Villanova, Pa.- The Villanova men’s (0-2) and women’s (2-0) swimming and diving teams travels to Piscataway, N.J. this weekend to swim against Georgetown and Seton Hall of the BIG EAST and host, Rutgers of the Big Ten.

The women with face all three schools while the men will only race Georgetown and Seton Hall in a conference-only meet. The quad meet will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 6 and will restart at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7.

Last year, the women defeated Georgetown, 233-114, and Seton Hall, 256-85, but fell to Rutgers, 189.5-154.5. The men fell to Georgetown, 209-132, and were defeated by Seton Hall, 245-102.

Head coach Rick Simpson is looking forward to this event in preparation for future meets in the year.

“I like the two-day format because it will prepare our student-athletes for the BIG EAST Conference Championships in February,” Simpson said. “There is a short recovery time from Friday night into Saturday morning, and that should ready and strengthen our athletes for what’s to come. Overall, we are expecting really good results.”

The women recently beat Connecticut back on October 24, 175-152. Freshman Darby Goodwin (Jupiter, Fla./ The Pine School) picked up gold as part of the Villanova 400-yard medley relay team. She would then place first in the 100 back and capture first in the 200 IM en route to being named the Women’s BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.

The men raced the Huskies on the same day and fell 191-113.

The Villanova women have 51 individual first through third finishes across two meets. Goodwin, senior Kaisla Kollanus (Hyvinkaa, Finland/Makelanrinteen Iukio), junior Emily Mayo (Centennial, Colo./ Arapahoe) and sophomore Caitlin Daday (Allentown, Pa./ Allentown Central Catholic) lead the way with three individual wins.

The men have 35 individual top-three finishes through two meets. Sophomore Jake Hoin has two first-place times in the 100 butterfly. Junior Harrison Rodts has wins in 1000 and 500 freestyle.

This is the third meet for Villanova swimming and diving this year.
