National Junior Team Member ‘Aukai Lileikis Commits to Cal

The University of California, Berkeley has picked up the verbal commitment of yet another highly sought-after member of the high school class of 2016: ‘Aukai Lileikis. Lileikis, hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, qualified for the 2015-16 National Junior Team with his runner-up performance at this summer’s Junior National Championship meet in the 200m free (1:49.90). Lileikis is a member of the Aulea Swim Club based out of Kailua and is a senior at Punahou High School.

Lileikis shows an incredible amount of range in his freestyle events and an equal ability in both long course and short course. He set the Hawaii high school records in the both 200 (1:35.62) and 500 (4:24.26) freestyles as a junior, then anchored Punahou’s 200 free relay with 20.03 and split 44.0 on their 400 free relay.

In addition to freestyle, Lileikis is an accomplished IMer; he won the B final in the 200m IM at Summer Junior Nationals with 2:04.29. That 200 IM, as well as his 100m free and 200m free, are all under the 2016 Olympic Trials standards.

His best times include:

  SCY LCM
50 free 20.40 23.66
100 free 44.13 50.65*
200 free 1:35.62 1:49.90*
500/400 4:24.26 4:01.27
200 IM 1:48.52 2:04.29*
*2016 Olympic Trials qualifying time

Lileikis’ top times in short course would have put him on the cusp the A finals in the 200 free, and just outside of the B finals in the 100 free and 500 free, at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships.

The Golden Bears have assembled quite a strong group of verbal commits this year, securing five of our top 20 picks in the high school class of 2016. Lileikis will join Michael Jensen (2), Jack Xie (5), Andrea Vergani (10), Ethan Young (11), Albert Gwo (17), and Shane Forker on the roster next fall.

In addition, Lileikis will overlap two years with fellow Punahou School alumna, Jasmine Mau.

Great get for the Cal men’s team…quite a strong group of recruits this go-around. I’d actually consider placing ‘Aukai in the top 20 of this year’s class, particularly compared to #19/J Murphy (a super talented recruit, as well, of course).

For the ever important 50/100/200 free swims, ‘Aukai is faster in each (AL/JM):
20.40 / 20.77
44.13 / 44.95
1:35.62 / 1:37.97

Those are significant for both individual results, but also for the potential impact on relays. I do think that Murphy’s benefit is a wide range of free swims, from the 50 all the way through to the mile. ‘Aukai also has a solid 2IM to go along with his free swims. All that being… Read more »
