Vermont took down Bryant this weekend, posting a 170-120 decision. On the way to the win, the 200 medley relay team of Courtney Gray, Shannon Cowley, Audrey Shenkin, and Christa Weaver set a new pool record with a time of 1:46.64.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Vermont women’s swimming & diving team posted its fourth straight victory on Sunday afternoon at Forbush Natatorium with a 172-120 win over the Bryant Bulldogs. The Catamounts set a new pool record in the 200-yard medley relay and improved to 5-2-0 on the season.

Vermont’s 200 medley relay team of Courtney Gray, Shannon Cowley, Audrey Shenkin, and Christa Weaver posted a time of 1:46.64 to break the pool record at Forbush and win the event.
Cowley was the individual champion of the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:05.25 to finish ahead of teammate Haley Gula(1:06.33). Gula won the 200 breast by nearly four seconds in 2:25.63.
The Catamounts controlled the individual freestyle events on Sunday. Weaver claimed the 50-yard free in 23.99 seconds, whileSarah Mantz took the 100 free with a time of 53.06 over teammate Kira Hancock (53.20).
Kelly Lennon won the 200 free (1:53.71) and dominated the 500 free (5:14.20) by more than nine seconds, while Madeline Blumenfeld easily won the 1000 free by more than five seconds in 10:44.25.
Gray took the 100 backstroke by less than a second with a time of 59.16 seconds. Lauren Punger took first place in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:08.30, while Stefi Geiger registered a win in the 100 fly in 1:00.34.
Maggie Preston narrowly won the 1-meter diving event with 237.96 points and claimed second in the 3-meter event with a total of 235.34.
Vermont hits the road next weekend to compete in the Terrier Invitational from Friday, Nov. 20 to Sunday, Nov. 22. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m. each day at Competition Pool at Boston University.
Bryant:
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.) and Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) each took home first-place finishes but the Bryant University women’s swimming and diving team fell to Vermont, 172-120, on Sunday afternoon in Burlington.
Salzano took home first place in the 200 back with a time of 2:07.59. She also finished second in the 100 back with a time of 59.90. Abernethy continued the outstanding start to her career with another diving victory. She scored 246.65 points to win the 3 meter and break her own school record in the event. Abernethy also finished second in the 1 meter with a season-high score of 237.44.
In addition to Abernethy’s performance, the rest of the Bulldog divers all enjoyed a great afternoon. Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Carissa Stemen (Naples, Fla.) finished 3-4 in the 1 meter dive, while all four divers set personal bests on the 3 meter. Stemen finished third with 216.53 points and Stephanie Jennings scored 210.15 points to finish fourth.
In the pool, Mackenzie Kirk (San Jose, Calif.), Julia Messina (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Lauren Doerrman (Oley, Pa.) all earned second-place finishes. Kirk finished second in the 1000 free, Messina placed second in the 200 breast and Doerrman was second in the 500 free.
The Bulldogs will compete in the Harold Anderson Invitational this weekend at Rhode Island.
