Austrian middle-distance freestyler Felix Auböck, whom we had reported on in September as having verbally committed to Indiana University, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Michigan for 2016-17.
Auböck is from Vienna, Austria and swims for the Austrian National Team. He represented Austria at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, taking 20th in the 400m free and 29th in the 200m free. He also led off his country’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
Auböck has already achieved the FINA “A” standards for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio in the 200m free, 400m free, and 1500m free. His top times in LCM are:

Auböck’s move to Michigan is a major coup for the Wolverines, as he brings NCAA top-8 scoring potential in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyles. His addition to the rest of the Michigan class of 2020 makes the Wolverines one of the strongest and recruiting classes in the country.

He’s an international swimmer. He most likely doesn’t know much about US schools and he had committed early in the process to Indiana who gave him a scholarship. He’s a mid distance and distance guy. Michigan probably told him he would be able to train with Connor Jaeger (American record holder), Michael Klueh, PJ Ransford (2nd at NCAAs), etc. in Ann Arbor. For an Olympian, this would be a great opportunity. Same thing happened with Dylan Bosch when he first committed to LSU. You don’t see this happen for US swimmers. It’s not fair for international swimmers to commit early and they should look around more before they commit.

Has he ever swam a 100 before, that times seems more like an en-route split, and for someone who has a 1:47 should be able to go at least 50 flat, probaly better. But either way he looks like a great addition to Michigan.
yes thats his actual 100 free PB, it would also be very fast for an en route split imo. if you go out like that you’d probably swim 1.44/1.45. funnily the austrian national record is only a 50.2 ^^
He swam that 100 Free 2 weeks before World’s. I’d assume we wasn’t shaved for it. He should be around a 49.5 if i had to guess.
