3 Portland Aquatic Club Seniors Commit for 2016-17

Three seniors from Portland Aquatic Club in Portland, Oregon, have recently made their college choices for 2016-17: Sid Farber (Denver), Felicia Anderson (Oregon State), and Ethan Hanson (Kenyon).

Felicia Anderson – Oregon State University

Anderson is a senior at Central Catholic High School in Portland. At the 2015 OSAA 6A High School Championships, Anderson placed seventh in the 100 back and ninth in the 100 fly. She also anchored Central Catholic’s 200 medley relay and anchored the 200 free relay.

Anderson had a good long course season, too, culminating in a top-8 finish in the 100m back at the Western Zone Senior meet, as well as B-final finishes in the 200 back and 200 IM, and D-finals in the 50 free and 100 fly. Most of her lifetime best times, however, come from freshman year. Her top times are:

  SCY LCM
50 back 27.24 31.61
100 back 56.94 1:05.11
200 back 2:04.00 2:21.73
100 fly 58.10 1:06.94
200 IM 2:11.38 2:27.63
50 free 24.62 28.12
100 free 53.52 1:00.51

The Beavers have a core of strong performers but they find themselves competing in the incredibly deep Pac-12 conference. In 2015, OSU nonetheless scored individual points with Samantha Harrison, Czarina Isleta, and Emma Osowski. Harrison will have graduated by the time Anderson first suits up but the current junior class is large and deep and should provide good leadership.

Ethan Hanson – Kenyon College

Hanson is a senior at Catlin Gabel High School in Portland, and a major force behind the Eagles’ first-place finish at the 2015 OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A High School Championships last February. Hanson won the 200 free (1:43.29) and 100 back (51.71) and led off both the 200 medley relay (24.56) and 200 free relay (22.33). As a sophomore, he placed seventh in the 200 IM at the 6A Championships when he attended Grant High School.

Hanson was a C finalist in the 100 back and a D finalist in the 200 back at the Western Zone Senior Long Course meet this summer. His best times include:

  SCY LCM
50 back 24.56 29.63
100 back 51.71 1:01.57
200 back 1:50.47 2:11.68
200 IM 1:55.69 2:18.83
50 free 22.33 25.82
100 free 48.89 58.77
200 free 1:43.29 2:05.50

Hanson will be a big help to the Lords as they try to regain the NCAC title from Denison. His 200 back would have knocked a Denison swimmer out of the A final at the 2015 conference championships, his 100 back would have been on the A/B bubble, his 200 IM and 200 free in the B final, and his 50 free in the C. That gives the Lords a lot of flexibility in how they can use Hanson over the next four years.

Sid Farber – University of Denver

Denver_w_FarberA 6’5” sprinter, Farber hasn’t yet swum for his high school in Oregon, because he has only recently moved to the state. Last year’s high school season saw him competing for New Jersey’s Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School where he placed third in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. Farber was named to the All-State Second Team for his performance in the 50 free.

In long course season, Farber competed at YMCA Nationals for his then-club team, Red Bank YMCA. He finished eighth in the 50m free and anchored a number of RBY’s relays. Notably, he went 23.48 at the end of their 200 medley relay and 23.20 at the end of the 200 free relay. He also was 53.53 on the end of the 400 free relay.

Farber’s best times are:

  SCY LCM
50 free 20.74 24.42
100 free 47.40 55.39
100 fly 56.75
100 back 56.04 1:07.64

The Pioneers dominated the 2015 Summit League Championships, and Farber’s presence would have given them even more strength. His 50 free would have landed him in the top half of the A final, while his 100 free would have made the B final.

Farber will join Colin Gilbert and Warren Sexson on the class of 2020 roster.
