After the first day of the Canada West Swimming Championships in Vancouver the University of Calgary leads the men’s points standings while UBC leads the women’s.

The evening started off with the distance events. Maia Brundage of UBC dominated the women’s 800 freestyle winning in a time of 8:37.88 almost 14 seconds ahead of Victoria Mock of the University of Victoria who posted a 8:51.41.
The men’s 1500 freestyle was much closer. Tristan Cole of the University of Calgary took the event in a time of 15:10.16 breaking Keegan Zanatta‘s pool record of 15:18.47. Jonathan Brown of UBC finished second in a time of 15:14.55 followed by Zanatta who posted a 15:15.63.
The women’s 50 butterfly came down to the wire with Kimberly Moors of the University of Manitoba taking the event in a time of 27.74 followed by Jacomie Strydom of UBC who posted a 27.77 and Rachel Grothe of the University of Calgary who hit the wall in a time of 27.81.
Two University of Calgary swimmers tied for the win in the women’s 50 backstroke. Chelsea Shaul and Leah Smal both hit the wall in a time of 29.14.
The women’s 50 breaststroke was also a close race race with UBC finishing first, second and third. Erin Stamp took the event in a time of 31.14 followed by Rebecca Terejko who touched in a time of 31.18 and Tera van Beilen who finished in a time of 31.27.
The University of Alberta swept the men’s events. Josiah Binnema won the 50 butterfly in a time of 24.61, Joe Byram took the 50 backstroke in a time of 25.05 while Nick Kostiuk collected gold in the 50 breaststroke posting a time of 28.24.
UBC took both the men’s and the women’s 800 freestyle relay. The women took the event in a time of 8:01.71 over 20 seconds ahead of the University of Calgary who finished in a time of 8:23.28. The men won the event in a time of 7:18.26 followed by the University of Calgary who hit the wall in a time of 7:21.94.
