Seltenreich-Hodgson Takes Three Events on Day 2 of Canada West Champs

UBC’s Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson had a very good night on the second day of the Canada West Championships in Vancouver. Seltenreich-Hodgson won the women’s 400 IM, 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle.

Touching in a time of 4:36.39 she destroyed Tianna Rissling‘s Canada West record of 4:39.22 set in 2013. She then took the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:09.99 finishing close to three seconds ahead of the field.

Seltenreich-Hodgson’s final win was not so easy as she was challenged by teammate Maia Brundage. Seltenreich-Hodgson took the event in a time of 1:58.14 followed by Brundage who touched in a time of 1:58.66.

Seltenreich-Hodgson was not the only UBC swimmer to break a Canada West record, Erin Stamp posted a 1:06.97 to win the women’s 100 breaststroke breaking the record of 1:07.24 set by Erica Morningstar in 2011.

Although the University of Calgary leads the point total on the women’s side of the competition the UBC Thunderbirds women won all seven events on Saturday evening.

Rebecca Terejko won the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.74 while Jacomie Strydom won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:00.32. The UBC women finished off the evening dominating the 400 freestyle relay posting a time of 3:43.08, 10 seconds ahead of the University of Calgary who posted a 3:53.76.

The University of Alberta men also had a good evening winning three of the six individual events. Josiah Binnema won the 100 butterfly in a time of 53.49, Joe Byram took the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:59.34 while Nick Kostiuk collected gold winning the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.92.

Alex Loginov of UBC won the 50 freestyle recording a time of 22.40 while teammate Keegan Zanatta took the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.49.

Tristan Cote of the University of Calgary won the 400 IM in a time of 4:14.77.

The UBC men took the 400 freestyle relay posting a time of 3:21.76. They were followed by the University of Alberta who finished in a time of 3:23.17 and the University of Calgary who recorded a time of 3:24.15.

Despite only winning one event on Saturday evening the University of Calgary has a narrow lead over UBC in both the women’s and men’s point standings.
