Veronika Popova Lowers Own Russian 200 Free Record at Euro SC Champs

2015 EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE WINGATE INSTITUTE IN NETANYA, ISRAEL

Veronika Popova notched a 1:52.46 in the final of the women’s 200 meter freestyle at 2015 European Short Course Championships, earning the silver medal and lowering her own Russian national record by .38.

Italy’s Federica Pellegrini won the race with 1:51.89, but Popova put together an excellent back half to overcome Femke Heemskerk of Netherlands, who had led the race through the first 150 meters.

It was a very different race from a year ago at the 2014 FINA World Championships in Doha. There Heemskerk placed third (behind Sarah Sjostrom and Katinka Hosszu), ahead of both Popova (fourth) and Pellegrini (fifth). Popova had set the Russian record in that race; her time was 1:52.84.

This time, Popova eased up a bit on her opening 50, but was much stronger over the second half of the race. The comparative splits are:
