Cowley to Compete Friday in Breaststroke at AT&T U.S. Winter Nationals

SWIMMING & DIVING NOTEBOOK
Sophomore Shannon Cowley of the Vermont women’s swimming & diving team will compete in the AT&T U.S. Winter National Championships on Friday (Dec. 4) at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington. Preliminary heats begin at 9 a.m. (pacific time) with finals scheduled for 6 p.m.A live video stream of the meet is available by clicking here.

ABOUT THE AT&T NATIONALS
The AT&T Winter National Championships allow swimmers to achieve qualifying times for the 2016 Olympic trials. Cowley will swim in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday and will try to qualify with a cut time of 1:11.49 Long Course Meters. The sophomore from Ann Arbor, Michigan is ranked 84th in the event with a top time this season of 1:02.92 in the 100-yard event.

COWLEY’S SEASON
Cowley’s standout sophomore season was highlighted when she set a new pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.14 in a home meet against Maine. She also won the 200 breast and 200 medley relay against the Black Bears. Cowley then helped set a new pool record while winning the 200 medley relay against Bryant and won the 100 breast individually. Most recently, Cowley swam a time of 1:03.56 to win the 100-yard event at the Terrier Invitational two weekends ago. Last season, Cowley set a new Vermont freshman and varsity record in the 100 breast at the America East Championships.

WHO’S NEXT
The Catamounts are back in action as a team on Monday, Jan. 18when they host Northeastern at 10 a.m. at Forbush Natatorium. Vermont placed third at the Terrier Invitational last time out in Boston and has won four consecutive dual meets by an average of nearly 72 points to sit 5-2 overall on the season.
