After breaking the 15-16 National Age Group record twice yesterday, Indie Swimming’s Michael Andrew lowered another National age group record in the 100 butterfly this morning. Andrew posted the fastest time of the morning in the men’s 100 butterfly with his time of 46.34. That time lowers his previous record of 46.36 from September.
If he swims in the final tonight, Andrew will have a great race with the former 15-16 NAG record holder, Ryan Hoffer. In September, Andrew clipped Hoffer’s NAG record of 46.42 by .08 to claim the national age group record. Hoffer, now 17, qualified with the second fastest time of the morning of 46.44.
Andrew and Hoffer are well ahead of the rest of the field going into the final. The next closest competitor qualified with a 48.01.
Take a look at the comparative splits below:
- Ryan Hoffer – 2014: 46.42
- 21.70
- 24.72
- Michael Andrew – September 2015: 46.36
- 21.63
- 24.73
- Michael Andrew – December 2015: 26.34
- 21.41
- 24.93

Wow. Congrats kid! Sucks that the video quality and production weren’t better but oh well. Il also hold judgement on technique because he is swimming fast but I do neeed to know a few things….
1. Can someone confirm that he keeps his head down on every breakout?
2. 3 pulls on the 1st 25, 7 pulls on the 2nd 25, 8 pulls on the 3rd 25, and 8 pulls on the last 25…wonder how many dolphin kicks? How far exactly are all the breakouts?….some data ya know…..would be really great if someone (XMetrics? Tritan?) would gather and share this info with a tweet or something. But to my point and I cant really tell from the video but… Read more »
*4 strokes on the first 25
My guess is that this swim wasn’t 100% effort. He was 46.36 in September in a shallow pool with normal blocks (no wedge/kickplate) after a short end-of-summer break. He went a 53.0 100 breast at the same meet. With how much he dropped in the IM and breast at this meet, my guess is we’ll see him go faster tonight.
To answer #4, that is not the new-new Adidas suit that just came out.
I want to see one of them dip under 46…but I’m greedy.
would be nasty to see that. but if anyone can tonight i think MA has it in him, specially after seeing him drop the 2 IM at night vs his morning swim, that was huge.
yeesssssss…. love to see some battles by top swimmers, even juniors. cant wait to see tonights race. judging by the 2 IM, we could see a big drop tonight, big meaning .2ish possibly .3 for MA. would be so sick.
