2015 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals: Day 4 Composite Top 10

With USA Swimming splitting its Winter Junior National meets for the first time in history, we here at SwimSwam are combining them right back again. For interested fans, we’ll be compiling a composite top 10 with the fastest 10 swims in each event from the combined results of both meets, along with some analysis of each night’s results.

Note: we’ll be compiling our lists based on the official finals finish orders from both meets.

2015 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals – Night 4

Saturday was a closer matchup, with East and West each winning six composite events at Speedo Winter Junior Championships. There were some interesting events that skewed left or right, though. The distance events were dominated by the West girls and boys: six of the ten fastest girls’ times and eight of the boys’ came out of Austin. Even more remarkable was the fact the top seven times in the boys’ race were all from the West.

There was parity in the girls’ 200 breast. Allie Raab of Nashville Aquatic Club broke the meet record when she won the East meet in 2:09.69, but an hour later Grace Zhao of Palo Alto Stanford took the record back, winning the West in 2:09.23. Similarly, Cardinal Aquatics’ Grace Oglesby (1:55.39) and Hannah Kukurugya (1:55.64) of Crown Point Swim Club led the field in the East, but Dakota Luther (1:55.60) of Austin Swim Club was right there with them with her win in the West.

A couple of events weren’t even close: Palo Alto Stanford’s Jeremy Babinet won the West’s 200 breast with 1:55.91; Carmel Swim Club’s Charles Vaughan (1:58.25) and Delaware Swim Team’s Matthew Otto (1:58.27) had a close finish in the East but were still 2.4 seconds behind Babinet.

And then there was Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Ryan Hoffer. What he did in the 100 free is simply mind-blowing: the 17-year-old covered four laps of the pool in 41.23, setting a meet, pool, and national age group record. He is only the second 18-and-under boy in history to have cracked the 42-second barrier. Both Michael Jensen of Upper Dublin Aquatic Club and Mark McGlaughlin of Iowa Flyers posted the next-fastest time of 43.64; Jensen won the East meet with his swim and McGlaughlin was second in the West.

Day 4’s Composite Top 10s are here.

They went under the 200 free relay record but the 400 free relay from Carmel Swim Club was 315 set earlier in the year.
