The 2015 King & Queen of the Sea Open Water race concluded this weekend, as Stage 3 wrapped up in Copacabana Beach, Brazil just today. The annual open water race is a 3-stage series set in Brazil, which features both professional and amateur swimmers alike. The overall event is uniquely contested with a relay-esque sequence of 500m, 450m and 50m in the water and on the sand, with each swimmer taking 3 rounds. The event also includes non-swimming events, such as stand-up paddle boarding and a beach run.
The first stage of the 3-part series took place in March, with stages 2 and 3 taking place in September and over this weekend, respectively. American swimmers Chip Peterson and Christine Jennings were awarded the 2015 King & Queen of the Sea trophy, as they locked in their team victory by just 3 seconds over the 2nd place pair from Germany.
Said Peterson of their win, “It was cool to compete against the best open water swimmers of the world. Some of these people will be here next year [at 2016 Olympic Games]. It was a well-fought fight for everyone; breathtaking, too.”
Jennings commented that “It’s really very memorable being in the place where the Olympic Games will take place. It was really amazing to finish the race in first and be the Queen of the Sea. I was a little dizzy and tired at the end, but it was worth it.”
