SMU’s Klein 11th In 3-Meter; 10th In 3-Meter Synchro At USA Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) — Mustang diver Bryce Klein wrapped up competition at USA Diving Winter Nationals placing 11th in the 3-meter event and 10th in the synchronized 3-meter dive.

The event was held at the IUPUI Natatorium, the same venue that will host the U.S. Olympic trials June 18-26, an event that Klein (3-meter, 3-meter synchro) and former Mustang Devin Burnett (3-meter, platform) have already qualified for.

Klein posted a total score of 1162.90 between the three rounds of 3-meter action, which included a 379.10 in Saturday’s final and an average round score of 63.18.

“Bryce had a great week,” head diving coach Jim Stillson said. “He dropped a few places in the finals, demonstrating how a few small mistakes can have such a high impact in the final placing. Performances like this are a great preparation for the upcoming championship season, and we both are excited to get back to work and focus on the rest of the NCAA season.”

In preliminary action, Klein posted a 384.80, and tacked on 399.00 in semifinals to qualify eighth out of 14 divers for finals.

“Bryce had an awesome day qualifying for finals,” Stillson said. “He really stepped up in the semifinal round, nailing his two weakest dives to move up. He put himself in great shape to have a strong showing in finals.”

Klein also competed in synchronized 3-meter with partner Bradley Christensen of Stanford, who is a fellow Southlake, Texas, native. The pair placed 10th in finals, posting a total score of 623.01 on the day including a 319.71 in finals.

Christensen is one of two partners Klein has qualified for Trials with in the synchro event. He will also compete with Dwight Dumais out of Austin, Texas. Divers may qualify for the event with multiple partners, but may only compete on up to two teams per event at the Trials.

In NCAA action, Klein has zone qualification scores in both the 1- and 3-meter.

The Mustang divers are back in action Jan. 3-5 when they head to Athens, Georgia, for the Georgia Diving Invite.
