SDSU Women, UIW Men Have Strong Showings At UC San Diego

UC San Diego kicked off the new year hosting four teams with the scoring being done head-to-head in dual meet format. Joining UCSD on the women’s side was the University of Incarnate Word (UIW), San Jose State University (SJSU), and San Diego State University (SDSU). On the men’s side UCSD only had two teams to compete against, with UIW and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). The meet had a mix of NCAA division 1 and 2 schools.

The women’s meet was lead by SDSU, who came out with wins over UIW, SJSU, and UCSD. They got the meet off to a good start, winning the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:50.52 over San Jose State’s 3:52.24. SDSU B claimed third in 3:53.16. Whitney Weisz was a standout for the Aztecs, finishing 1st in the 100 and 200 free and 2nd in the 50. She led a 1-2 finish in the 200 free ahead of teammate Natalie Ruiz, and a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 free ahead of teammates Taylor Johnson and Savannah Miller. Johnson also won the 50 free. Other winners for the Aztecs were Rachel Kelch (200 fly), Summer Harrison (100 fly), and Alexandra Caplan (1-meter dive).

UC San Diego came out with a victory over UIW, with excellent performances from Julia Toronczak and Jaimie Bryan. Toronczak swept the 100 and 200 backstroke, while Bryan swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

San Jose State walked away with wins over UCSD and UIW, lead by freestyle ace Riley Spitser. Spitser won the 500 free, 1000 free, and lead off the winning the 200 free relay. Cari Reiswig also picked up a win for them in 3-meter diving.

Incarnate Word picked up one win on the women’s side, with Alona Kyselova taking the 400 IM.

On the men’s side, the Incarnate Word Cardinals came out on top defeating the host UC San Diego by a score of 158-140. The Cardinals won 9 of 16 events, including multiple wins coming from Kyrylo Shevts, Beau Fusilier and Brendan Schaffer. Shvets won the 500 and 1000 free, Fusilier won the 200 free, 200 fly and 400 IM, and Schaffer picked up both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving wins with his teammate Alexandre Ramirez finishing 2nd in both. Also picking up wins for UIW was Jorge Escarcega (100 back) and Aaron Moran (200 back).

The hosts UC San Diego were led by Kevin Wyldler, who picked up wins in the 50 free, 100 free, and helped the team to wins in both the 400 medley and 200 free relays. Garrett Tse was the other winner for UCSD, taking the 100 fly.

Miguel Chavez was the only swimmer from MST to pick up a win, and he took two sweeping the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
