Iowa Women Take Down Illinois in Big 10 Match Up

The Iowa Hawkeyes won 11 of 16 events against conference foes, Illinois at their home pool this morning. The Hawkeyes defeated the Fighting Illini for the fifth straight year with a final score of 174.5 to 125.5.

The Hawkeyes started the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, when the A team of Allie OrvisEmma SougstadKelly McNamara and Olivia Kabacinski touched the pads in 1:44.65, just ahead of Illinois A team (1:44.88).

Kabacinski went on to win the 100-yard free in 51.55 and her teammate Shea Hoyt took the victory in the 100-yard breast in 1:04.87.

Sougstad had a successful meet, winning the 50-yard free in 23.89 and the 200-yard breast in 2:18.95, touching almost 4 seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher of Illinois Jennifer Coady (2:22.41). She got out touched in the 200-yard IM, finishing in 2:04.71, just behind Illinois’s Sam Stratford, who touched the pads 2:04.32.

Sophomore Meghan Lavelle also earned valuable points for the Hawkeyes, winning both the 100-yard back (57.35) and 200-yard back (2:04.39). Her teammate Abbey Schneider also gained points, winning the 1000-yard free in 10:20.14.

The Fighting Illini posted a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard free with Megan Vuong winning in 1:52.42 and Gabbie Stecker finishing 2nd shortly behind her in 1:52.53. Stecker went on to win the 500-yard free in 5:01.92. They took another victory in the 100-yard fly, when Lori Lynn

Iowa also got double victories in the diving events with Morgan Rafferty winning the 1m with a score of 267.75 and Lydia Lehnert winning the 3m with a score of 311.70.

The Fighting Illini took the victory in the final event, with the A team of Audrey RodawigGabby Bethke, Stecker and Sarah Skystus winning the 400 free relay in 3:28.97.
