The University of North Dakota posted a pair of wins against rival University of South Dakota on Saturday. On the women’s side, the win was 167-125, while the men won 166-121.
Women’s Meet
The women of North Dakota posted their first win of the night in the 400 medley relay, where Maddie Derby, Steph Frey, Gracie DiMeo, and Cassie Walth came together for a 3:55.76 to outswim USD’s 4:01.40.
Derby went on to sweep the backstroke events for the Fighting Hawks with a 58.69 to win the 100 by almost a second and a half and a 2:07.94 to win the 200 by a second. Her relay teammate Frey won the 100 breast in 1:04.51 and the 100 free in 52.39.
North Dakota sophomore Gabi Liedy grabbed a big win in the 1000 free, posting 10:44.61 to outswim her teammate Katie Stover‘s 10:51.16. Stover came back to win the 500 free in 5:13.59.
The 50 free was a huge sweep for North Dakota, with Courtney Funk (23.90), Alli Schwab (24.19), and Frey (24.47) taking the top three slots.
UND freshman Marlena Pigliacampi won the 200 fly in 2:08.66.
The University of South Dakota women took the other relay win, when Katie Svendson, Maggie Smith, Theresa Godlewski, and Quinn Fawcett teamed up for a 3:41.43 in the 400 free relay.
Coyote diver Greysen Hertting took a pair of wins to score big points for USD, with 304.60 points on the 3 meter and 294 points on the 1 meter.
Sophomore Svendson also took an individual title, claiming the top spot in the 400 IM with 4:45.68.
Other wins for the Coyote women came from Hannah Gupton (100 fly: 59.86), Kassidie Cornell (200 breast: 2:27.94), and Taylor Kidd (200 free: 1:57.97).
Men’s Meet
The men of North Dakota made sure to start off the meet with a bang, when Nick Lawson, Sean Donnelly, Martin Pozniak, and Noah Lucas teamed up for 3:27.95 in the 400 medley relay, outswimming USD’s 3:29.75.
Senior Aaron Chanas-LaRue celebrated his senior night with victories in the 200 free (1:40.29) and the 500 free (4:41.70). His 500 swim was nine seconds ahead of his USD challenger.
Freshman Sam Marlow also grabbed double individual titles for the night, with wins in both backstroke events. He took the 100 back in 52.88 and the 200 back in 1:51.40.
North Dakota freshman Jacob Wielinski won his event by the biggest margin of the night, clocking 9:29.26 in the 1000 free to become the only swimmer under 10 minutes.
Other wins for the Fighting Hawks came from senior Matt Koken (200 fly: 1:55.91), junior Noah Lucas (50 free: 20.95), and senior Colin MacQuarrie (100 free: 46.65).
The men of South Dakota, Jared Thorson, Greyson Heckman, Eric Erlenmeyer, and Chris Pospisil, won the 400 free relay with 3:10.69.
Jake Knowles won two individual events for the Coyotes with 58.97 in the 100 breast and 2:10.09 in the 200 breast.
Other wins for USD came from Chase Testa (1 meter dive: 275.40), Brady Saunders (3 meter dive: 276.90), Thorson (100 fly: 53.09), and Adam Fenton (400 IM: 4:25.05).
Both teams will be back in action next weekend at the Minnesota Challenge.
