South Carolina Men and Women Defeat East Carolina, William & Mary, in Tri-Meet

The South Carolina men and women both earned victories over East Carolina and William & Mary this weekend at ECU in Greenville, NC.

Women’s Meet

On the women’s side, South Carolina was led by a triple by Emma Barksdale.  She won the 1000 free in 10:12.36, the 200 breast in 2:17.39, and the 200 IM in 2:04.15.

Four other South Carolina women won events.  Taylor Worrell took the 200 free in 1:52.38, and Maggie Harman wrapped up the final freestyle event, the 500, in 4:56.44.

Other event winners for South Carolina included Ashleigh Ferguson in the 100 back (57.51) and Paige Maynard in the 200 fly (2:01.68).

East Carolina won five events, including most significantly both relays.  The Pirates also picked up wins from Anna Maria Svanbergsson in the 100 free in 51.88, Anastasia Amoiroglou in the 50 free (23.93) and Megan Sellers in the 100 breast (1:04.58).  ECU began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay in 1:43.87, and finished the meet with a nailbiter of a victory in the 400 free relay.  All three teams finished within 0.13 of each other, with the Pirates touching first in 3:30.33.

The Tribe women took two events.  Sophie Rittenhouse won the 200 back in 2:02.80 and Jessie Ustjanauskas won the 100 fly in 56.13.

South Carolina 175, William & Mary 110
East Carolina 180, William & Mary 107

Men’s Meet

South Carolina’s Akaram Mahmoud swept the distance freestyles, winning the 500 in 4:26.17 and the 1000 in 9:05.22, leading a Gamecock sweep of the top three spots in the latter event.  Mahmoud currently has the 6th-fastest 1650 in Division I this season.

Nils Wich-Glasen also doubled for South Carolina.  He won the 100 breast in 55.77 and came back in the second half of the meet to take the 200 breast in 2:00.17.

Other event winners for the Gamecocks included Caleb Tosh in the 200 fly (1:51.47), Jonathan Boland in the 100 fly (49.91), and Phillip Willett in the 200 IM (1:52.20).  South Carolina also won the 200 medley relay in 1:31.35.

The William & Mary men earned victory in five different events.  Will Manion swept the backstroke races in 49.63 and 1:49.36.  Billy Russell won the 200 free in 1:40.49, and Joseph Eiden took the 100 free in 45.69.  Additionally, the Tribe ended the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, touching first in 3:03.67.

Shawn Hunter won the 50 free in 21.08, ECU’s only victory on the men’s side, although they still managed to pull out the victory over William & Mary.
