Claire Adams Breaks State Record in 100 Back at Indiana HS Prelims

The Carmel High School girls have done the work in prelims on Friday at the 2016 Indiana High School State Championship meet to put themselves well on their way to a record-breaking 30th-consecutive state championship.

If they can finish the victory today, they will break the National Record of Punahou High School’s boys track & field team (Hawaii – Barack Obama’s alma mater) as the longest known Championships in the country. The Punahou team won 29-straight championships from 1958-1986.

The Carmel girls took top seeds in 5 of the 9 individual events and all 3 relays on Friday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium. That includes junior Emma Nordin, who was the top qualifier in the 200 free (1:46.03) and 500 free (4:49.01).

Nordin is the defending state champion in the 500, but was runner-up last year in the 200 free to teammate Claire Adams. While Nordin was already faster in prelims than she was in either round last year, her freshman teammate Kelly Pash is not far behind as the 2nd qualifier in 1:48.21.

Adams, meanwhile, shifted to the 100 free (48.63) and 100 back (51.65) for this year’s meet. In the latter of those events, the US National Teamer has already broken her State Record, swimming a 51.65 to be the top qualifier. She was a 51.99 in prelims of last year’s meet, and while she was a touch slower in finals, she still won easily.

Among non-Carmel swimmers, York freshman Emily Weiss was impressive. She is the top qualifier in the girls’ 100 breast in 1:01.64, followed by South Bend – Riley’s junior Abigail Kirkpatrick (1:01.95) and South Bend – St. Joseph’s freshman Aislinn Walsh (1:02.40). By qualifying times, that 100 breaststroke final will be the most competitive of the meet.

Diving prelims will begin at 8:00 on Saturday morning, while swimming finals kick off at 1:00 PM Eastern (local) time.

51.79 for Burchill in the 100 fly final
And looks like Adams was at 100% in prelims. She won the 100 free in 48.83 and the 100 back in 52.39.

I wanted to reply earlier but have been out of touch for a week with medical things.
I know how you follow everything incredibly well. I am not sure the history of the American selection method and we are different than all others with our numbers. You would have to be one of those people who wake up that day and what you have to do. No matter what the past accomplishments have been. The only person given an opportunity to make the team because of problems was Jeff Farrell in 1960 and he turned it down and swam the 200 trials to make the team after only 8 or9 days earlier had his appendices removed and… Read more »

I think Claire Adams is a better long course swimmer, which is rare among young Americans. So it’s interesting to see her improve her SCY times in that olympic year.
Too bad the 100 back is after the 100 free. She will be more tired. But the national high school record is definitely beatable.
51.43 by Olivia Smoliga is the target.
And to think that Alex Walsh has swum 51.62 last December and is still in middle school…. 🙂

100 fly – Veronica Burchill prelim 52.13 and public record of 51.70
