Prior to the season, University of Florida head coach, and 2012 U.S. Olympic coach, Gregg Troy made the assertion that if Caeleb Dressel were to swim an 18.39 in the 50 free, which would be the fastest time ever, that the coach’s famous mustache would be gone.
Dressel not only hit the 18.39 exactly in prelims of the 50 free at last week’s SEC Championship meet, he came back in finals to go even faster: an 18.23.
True to his word, Troy not only lost the mustache, but let Caeleb Dressel, the man himself, do the shaving.
Fellow Florida swimmer Georgia Hohmann captured the scene on video, which you can watch below. Dressel would also break the American, though not NCAA or U.S. Open, Record in the 100 free later in the meet in 41.07.

Very nice form, and a lot of power on display here. Great execution. The real question is, how much better at mustache shaving will Dressel be next month when he is fully tapered? He seems quite rested here, but undoubtedly there is still potential for Dressel to shave mustaches even MORE effectively.
Those arms sure look shaved to me… Oh, but he said he didn’t shave for SEC’s and I’m sure we can take his word for it. He saved his best performance for the post-meet shaving.
He is a better man than I for not at first giving him the Hitler stash.
Troy said he would retire if Caeleb goes under 18.
18.39
It is quite incredible that Dressel swam the exact time that his coach has talked about before the season.
% of chances it could happen like that?
Very funny story.
If he had went 18.39 again in the final it would have been truly ironic and unbelievable.
