Indiana freshman Ian Finnerty, who had never broken 53 seconds in his 100 breast prior to college, found himself touching first for the Big Ten conference crown on Friday.

Finnerty touched at 52.15 in prelims, and then blasted a 51.75 in finals to sneak under 52 seconds, the only swimmer to do so.

The Hoosiers made up half of this A final, with Tanner Kurz placing 3rd along and Cody Taylor and Levi Brock joining Kurz and Finnerty in the top 8. Breaststroke was a key strength for Indiana this weekend– they also put up Kurz, Taylor and Finnerty to the A final of the 200 breast.

Indiana finished 2nd overall at the Big Ten Championships.

Noticed there are NO officials in bulkhead at both the turning and starting end! Assume they did the same way for the fly events? Surprised to see that at a meet of this level. Wasn’ t this an issue at the PAC 12 meet a few years ago?

It seems one contributing factor in breaststroke time drops is the use of two downward butterfly kicks after the start and after turns. This is illegal ……..

as per a rule change, that is no longer true, a swimmer may give one undulation as well as one full downward butterfly kick legally.

Breaststroke is sooo fast now, even compared to five or so years ago…51’s left and right. Someone needs to go 49.99
