Madeira senior Kylie Jordan won 4 events and broke 5 state records while the Collegiate School and Trinity Episcopal School won girls and boys titles at the 2016 Virginia Independent School Championships.
Girls Meet
Senior Kylie Jordan starred individually, smashing state records in all four of her finals events for Madeira.
Jordan broke her own state records in the 200 free and 100 fly, defending her 2015 titles in both. In the freestyle race, Jordan was 1:47.32, a full second under her 2015 mark. The butterfly saw her take seven tenths off her state record, going 53.00.
Jordan also led Madeira to a sweep of the free relays. Her 23.02 split capped a 1:35.47 200 free relay that broke a state record set by Madeira last year. Also on that team: Izzy Gati, Giovi Moriarty and Maddie Helbrun.
Gati, Heilbrun and Jordan returned to join with Meaghan Doyle for the 400 free relay win and state record in 3:31.23. That got under the 2014 record by just a tenth of a second, with Jordan splitting 50.06 on her leg. Jordan will continue her career with Duke next fall.
In prelims, Jordan led off that relay with a 49.94 that also got under the old state record in the 100 free.
The Collegiate School took a narrow team title witha deep team effort, winning just a single event. That came courtesy of sophomore Caroline Hall, who scored 361.75 points to win diving by just 0.1 points over St. Catherine’s Naomi Chetelat. That 6-point swing turned out to be a big one, as the Collegiate School beat St. Catherine’s for the team title by just 36.
Highland senior Reni Moshos doubled up individually, winning the 200 IM and 100 backstroke in record times. Moshos went 1:59.82 to break her own state mark in the 200 IM, then added her name to the 100 back record with a 54.25. Moshos, like Jordan, heads to the ACC next year after verbally committing to UNC.
One more state record fell on the girls side, to Bishop Ireton junior Anna Shumate in the 100 breast. Shumate went 1:03.50 in that race.
Other event winners:
- Flint Hill missed a state record in the 200 medley relay by just .01. Jasmine Hellmer, Lauren Freeman, Mimi Baker and Sisi Baker combined to go 1:47.93 in that race.
- Hellmer also won the 100 free individually. She got under the old state record with a 50.64, though she didn’t top the new mark set by Jordan in prelims.
- Hampton Roads Academy sophomore Bronwyn Keating won a tight 50 free, going 24.24.
- Bishop O’Connell freshman Madelyn Donohoe had one of the meet’s best races, going 4:49.36 to blow out the 500 free field. That’s just over two seconds off the state record held by Rachel Naurath. Donohoe was also second in the 200 free to Jordan.

Boys Meet
St. Christopher’s Charlie Swanson won four events, breaking state records in two of them, but it was the Trinity Episcopal School that held on for the team title on the boys side.
Swanson, a Michigan commit, broke a state record individually in the 200 IM, going 1:48.50 to take almost a half second off his own mark from 2015. Swanson also won the 500 free in 4:31.19.
In addition, his 25.3 breaststroke leg helped St. Christopher’s win the 200 medley relay in a new state record time of 1:33.45. Joining him were Sean Hogan, Townes West and Will Cox, with West putting up the field’s best fly split at 22.8.
Hogan, Drake Wielar, Gareth Mancini and Swanson also won the 400 free relay, going 3:08.92 and coming within a few tenths of the state record. Swanson anchored that team in 45.02.
The Trinity Episcopal School won the meet, though, thanks in part to a 200 free relay win. The team of Aidan Sullivan, Michael Sacks, Sam Kettlewell-Sites and Jacob Johnson went 1:26.18, getting a 21.08 split from Kettlewell-Sites on the third leg.
The other double individual winner was Bishop Sullivan’s Philip Speri. The senior went 1:40.82 to win the 200 free and 45.66 for the 100 free title.
St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes diver Frankie Cortes-Inchauspe set a new state record on 1-meter, scoring 478.45 points.
Other event winners:
- St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes also won the 50 free, with senior Ian Thompson going 20.96.
- Hampton Roads senior Jared Norton took the 100 fly in 50.87.
- Sam Cuthbert of the Collegiate School won the 100 back in 49.72.
- Woodberry Forest senior Nick Switzer went 56.13 to win the 100 breast in a touchout of Hampton Roads’ Norton (56.25)
