After day one’s relays, USC has positioned itself with a slim lead over the Stanford Cardinal, both teams benefitting largely from the already completed diving portion of the meet.
Reed Malone will compete in the 500 free after a stellar 1:31.94 anchor leg on USC’s 2nd place 800 free relay last night, and without Cal’s Ryan Murphy, Jacob Pebley, or Josh Prenot, freshman Bear Andrew Seliskar will lead the charge in the 200 IM. There is no clear favorite in the 50 free today, but Stanford sophomore Sam Perry‘s 19.58 leads a tight field this morning.
Diving’s done, so just these three swimming events will be in contention this morning.
500 FREESTYLE PRELIMS
Stanford got off to a strong start this morning, with sophomore Liam Egan (4:13.67) and senior Danny Thomson (4:15.82) earning the first and third spots for finals tonight.

200 IM PRELIMS

Another freshman, USC’s Patrick Mulcare, grabbed 4th with a 1:44.39. The first year is just .29 off of Dimitri Colupaev‘s school record of 1:44.10.

50 FREE PRELIMS
Renny Richmond, who anchored Arizona’s title-earning 200 medley relay last night, took the top seed by a hair with a 19.51. Cal’s Justin Lynch was right behind at 19.52.
This whole heat is pretty bunched up, and it wouldn’t be surprising if any one of these guys gets to the wall first.

- Justin Lynch (CAL), 19.52
- Sam Perry (STAN), 19.61
- Tyler Messerschmidt (CAL), 19.63
- Jeff Garnier (STAN), 19.69
- Ralf Tribuntsov (USC), 19.73
- Chatham Dobbs (ARIZ), 19.78
- Patrick Conaton (STAN), 19.83
The PAC 12 has always been bad with their Live Results management. Nothing posted for the 800 FR from last night or the 500 Free prelims this morning. Also, the results pdf from last night didn’t include individual relay splits for the 800. Even the MAC would do a better job.
It looks like Stanford means business.
No kidding. They look to be in a great position even with Ogren disqualified in prelims. Will be an exciting night.
