For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Mid” to swimmers in the B final and “Down” to swimmers in the C final.
At this meet in particular, only the A and B finals are scored, so although swimmers may get a 2nd swim in the C final, they won’t score points. For this reason, we’ve only tallied “ups” and “downs” for Pac-12s.

USC jumped out to a lead after last night’s finals, 6 points ahead of 2nd place Stanford. Utah (138) and ASU (137) sit 3rd and 4th. Arizona is in 5th with 101 points and Cal is 6th with 80 points. Although Zona won the 200 medley relay last night and Cal won the 800 free relay, diving was completed last week and has been factored into team scoring.
Following this morning’s prelims, Stanford has put themselves in position to overtake USC for the lead. The Cardinal landed 8 A finalists and 3 B finalists to give themselves a chance to outscore the Trojans, who have 5 A finalists and 5 B finalists tonight.
Arizona and Cal also put 5 each into A finals tonight. Arizona has the slight edge, with 6 B finalists to Cal’s 4. The race between those two teams should stay close, as they look to move up from 5th and 6th.
TEAM SCORES
With diving already done, USC and Stanford led the field before tonight’s relays with 127 points each. Factoring in the 200 medley and 800 free relay points, USC has a slim lead over Stanford, while Arizona and Cal have a lot of work to do in the pool to catch the leaders.

Diving should be included in ups and downs since it is an equal event just like swimming
There’s a reason why this is Swim Swam rather than Dive Dove.
It’s already included in the SCORE
While we do recognize the importance of divers, we’ve already rolled all diving points into our scoring for the meet, it would be redundant to also include them in up/downs.
You’ve even got the “with diving already done” highlighted as a hyperlink too 😛
