Paltrinieri and Detti Record World’s Top Two Times in Milan

World champion Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy placed himself atop of the world rankings in the 1500 freestyle today winning the event at the Trophy of Milan posting a 14:40.61. Fellow Italian Gabriele Detti finished second in a time of 14:48.86 to put himself second in the world rankings.

Since winning the 2014 European Championships in a time of 14:39.93 the Italian has been on a tear. In August he won the World Championships posting a lifetime best and European record time of 14:39.67 and then went on to break the short course world record in the event winning the European Short Course Championships in a time of 14:08.06.

At this same competition last year Paltrinieri put up a time of 14:58.49 before going on to win the Italian National Championships a month later in a time of 14:43.87.

Detti beat his lifetime best by almost four seconds, improving on the time of 14:52.53 which he recorded to win the bronze at the 2014 European Championships.

With both men swimming this fast just a month out of this year’s National Championship, which run from April 19th-23rd, it is exciting to think how fast the results in Riccione could be.

Another Italian put up a time that ranks in the world’s top five. Federica Pellegrini posted a time of 1:55.92 placing her fifth in the world rankings. Her time is less than a second off of her textile best of 1:55.00, which she recorded at a meet in Vichy last summer.

Paltrinieri excellent time but we already knew he was a wonderful athlete and likely Olympic champion later this year given the natural demise of many long-distance freestylers of yesteryear and his continual improvement. Detti’s time is more alluring, placing himself in top 20 of all-time and erasing 10 seconds from his best since 2013. Instead of focusing on whether Sun Yang can defeat Paltrinieri (verdict: unlikely but possible based from the past) perhaps we should ask the question “Will Sun Yang finish on the podium?” He’s likely to prioritise success in the shorter events where he’s now ranked higher due to the regression of swimmers such as Agnel and has to overcome an arguably stronger field than London. Paltrinieri, Detti,… Read more »

Paolo, although I root for Paltrinieri (for two good reasons) I thought Sun was the favourite in Kazan.
Now it’s a big question mark.

Paolo, nobody is perfect.
And I’m not an expert at all.

The only way for Paltrinieri to beat Sun Yang in my opinion is:
– to not swim in a lane near the Chinese so that he can’t ride Paltrinieri’s wave
– to lead from the start
– to impose a crazy fast pace, a WR pace
– to hope that Sun Yang is not the same Sun Yang anymore and can’t hold that pace
If not, and I think you will agree with me, Paltrinieri will be destroyed by Sun Yang in the last 100.

The question is, and I’m unable to answer right now:
will Sun Yang be as strong in… Read more »

Since Yangs best is ten seconds faster than this and 9 seconds faster than Gregario. I dont think sun should be that worried. He hasn’t been defeated in the 1500 since Rome for a reason

Are you serious?
14.40 not tapered! He’s on track for a possible world record this year.
Maybe I’m gonna think to change my Rio predictions.
Even Sun Yang must start to tremble.

Your pick was Sun.., disappointing from a real expert like you.
In general it’s incredible how people (for instance Uberfan) don’t perceive the change. Sun was unbeatable in the past (especially between 2011 and 2013) but already at last year Worlds Paltrinieri was ready to defeat him in the 1500 free. And perhaps also Sun know that.

Completely agree: it’s exciting to think how fast the results in a month will be.
This is the most incredible untapered and unshaved 1500 LC free I can remember…also the best Sun Yang (2011-2013) didn’t swim a 14.40 in-season like Paltrinieri has done, and Detti, after last year’s injuries, is quicky rising to astonishing heights.
