2016 Dolfin Junior National Cup Day Five Finals Recap

2016 DOLFIN JUNIOR NATIONAL CUP

The distance events were the first to be contested on the last day of the 2016 Dolfin Junior National Cup in Clearwater, Florida. For the girls’ 800 free, Virginia Gators’ 15-year-old Caroline Kulp blasted an 8:58.59 for a win by almost nine seconds. 18-year-old Sarah Laabs turned in a 9:07.29 for 2nd. The boys’ 1500 went to a swimmer in the 16& under category again, as Theodore Smith, a 16-year-old from the Sarasota Tsunami Swim Team, posted a 15:46.07 for the win.

Vien Nguyen, who has been stacking up the wins this weekend at this meet, settled for 2nd in the 200 fly. Her time of 2:15.04 was faster than all but one competitor, 15-year-old Olivia Carter at 2:13.85. The boys’ 200 fly went to Wisconsin-bound Cooper Hodge of the Mason Manta Rays (2:05.40).

Santa Clara Swim Club’s Jenny Ma swam a solid 100 breast, touching at 1:11.52 to edge out Holly Jansen (1:11.79) and Mary Stumpf (1:12.34). Hodge, coming right out of the 200 fly, added another win in the 100 breast with a 1:04.20.

Beata Nelson, who had already won multiple events at the meet, was bested in the 100 free by two competitors. She posted a 57.10, which was a tick behind both Ashley Volpenhein (56.60) and Daria Pyshnenko (56.84). On the boys’ side, it was Phillip Speri who clocked a 52.21, the only competitor under 53 seconds. Khalil Fonder was close to that barrier, though, putting up a 53.01.

The 400 free relays closed out the meet, with the Mason Manta Rays taking the girls’ race and Aquajets Swim Team taking the boys’. Volpenhein produced the big split of 56.53 for the Rays, while the Aquajets got a quick 52.02 lead-off from Sam Schilling as well as a 52.45 anchor from Jordan Greenberg.
