AgonSwim Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 3/16/2016

Announcing our Weekly Wonders for the weekend of March 11-13, 2016.

Sophie Murphy, 12, Meriden Silver Fins: 200y free (1:52.74) – Murphy dropped an improbable 6 seconds to edge state record-holder Meghan Lynch and win the girls’ 11-12 200 free at the Connecticut Age Group Championships at Wesleyan University. Murphy broke both the CT record and the Resident record with her swim. She also won the 50/100 free and the 100 back, and went best times in the 50/100/200 free and 50/100/200 back.

Cora Dupre, 14, Mercy Healthplex Sea Wolves: 200y free (1:51.01) – Dupre went a best time by 2 seconds and won the girls’ 13-14 200 free at the Ohio Age Group Short Course Championship Meet at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The weekend also produced best times for Dupre in the 50 free, 100 back, 100 breast, and 200 IM.

Isabel Gormley, 14, Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics: 500y free (4:56.85) – Gormley won high point award for 13-14 girls at the Metropolitan Junior Olympic Championships after winning the 200/500 free, 100/200 back, 200 fly, and 200/400 IM. Gormley helped AGUA win the team title at Metro JOs, defeating Long Island Aquatic Club for the first time in more than a decade.

Elise Bauer, 13, Central Florida Marlins: 1000y free (10:19.73) – Swimming at Florida Swimming Spring Age Group Championships, Bauer dropped over 20 seconds in the 1000 free and finished sixth; she was 55 seconds faster than she had been last year. She also dropped nearly 40 seconds in the 1650 for a third-place finish; there, she was nearly 2 minutes faster than a year ago. Bauer also achieved new PBs in the 500 free, 50/100 back, 200 fly, and 200/400 IM.

Grace Chen, 15, Fairport Area Swim Team: 100y back (55.82) – Chen picked up her first Winter Juniors cut in the 100 back when she led off Fairport Area Swim Team’s winning 400 medley relay with 55.82 at the Niagara Swimming LSC Short Course Championships. Chen wrapped up the weekend with new times in the 100/200 free, 50/100/200 back, and 100 fly.

Jonny Kulow, 11, Lander Swim Club: 100y back (59.75) – Kulow broke 1:00 for the first time while winning the boys’ 11 100 back at the Northwest Region Short Course Age Group Championships hosted by King Aquatic Club at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Kulow also won the 50/100/200 free and went best times in all those events plus the 50 breast and 50 fly.

Rachel Maizes, 15, Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA: 100y breast (1:03.04) – Swimming at the New Jersey YMCA 13 & Over State Championships, Maizes dropped .8 in prelims to get her first Winter Juniors cut, then another .7 in finals to place second in the girls’ 15-18 100 breast with a Summer Juniors time. In addition to the 100 breast, Maizes earned new best times in the 500 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

Hayden Harlow, 16, Northwest Arkansas Aquatics: 100y breast (56.77) – Harlow won the boys’ 15-18 high point award at the Arkansas Swimming Short Course Championships hosted by Arkansas Dolphins Swim Team, after winning the 100 free, 100/200 breast, 200 fly, and 200/400 IM. He also won the consolation final of the 50 free with the event’s fastest time. His times in the 50/100 free, 100 breast, 200 fly, and 400 IM were all PBs.

Holden Smith, 12, Triton Swimming: (4:26.17) – Swimming at the Eastern Section Southern Zone Age Group Championships hosted by Southern Crescent Aquatic Team, Smith won the boys’ 11-12 100/200 free, 100 back, 50 fly, and 200/400 IM. He finished the weekend with new times in all of those events, plus the 50 free and 50 back.
