After swimming the 2nd-fastest time in Wednesday morning’s prelims of the women’s 100m backstroke, Fran Halsall will be scratching the final in anticipation of the 50m freestyle tomorrow. Halsall was just off her best time this morning with a 1:00.40 performance.
Halsall’s absence in the 100m backstroke puts top seed Elizabeth Simmonds in a great position to make the team. She led things off with a swift 1:00.29 this morning.
Moving up to the middle lanes for tonight’s final will be Georgia Davies who swam a 1:00.60 this morning. Young up-and-c0mer Kathleen Dawson rocked a new Scottish national record in the heats with a 1:00.70 and will also likely be in the mix after taking the fourth seed, and now moving up to third.
All three will need to be significantly faster tonight if they have hopes of making the team. The “British 1st place” qualifying standard sits at 59.05 – a time that Halsall has not been close to in her career.
Halsall will be looking towards tomorrow’s 50m freestyle. She’s entering as the heavy favourite with a seed time of 24.23. She’ll need to be close to that in finals if she wants to meat the “British 1st Place” standard of 24.37.
