Phelps: The only time I went faster in season, I broke a WR (Video)

ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES AT MESA

MEN’S 200 METER INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY – FINAL

  • FINA A: 2:00.28
  • S. Olympic Trials: 2:05.09

Top Three:

  1. Michael Phelps, North Baltimore Aquatic Club, 1:57.90
  2. Chase Kalisz, North Baltimore Aquatic Club, 1:59.05
  3. David Nolan, North Baltimore Aquatic Club, 2:00.89

Michael Phelps led a NBAC sweep of the top three spots.  Phelps led wall-to-wall, holding off teammates David Nolan and Chase Kalisz.  Nolan was in 2nd place at the halfway mark, but Kalisz passed him on the breast leg and began to inch closer to Phelps, splitting 33.65 to Phelps’s 34.05.  It looked like Phelps may have intentionally pushed the breaststroke a little hard, as Kalisz continued to close during the final 50, but Phelps had more than enough of a lead and touched in 1:57.90 to Kalisz’s 1:59.05.  That’s not too far off the 1:57.60 Phelps swam in December, which remains the 3rd-fastest time in the world this year.  Nolan placed 3rd in 2:00.89.

Behind the NBAC trio, Max Williamson took 4th in 2:02.61.  Andrew Seliskar was in 3rd after the fly leg, but steadily lost ground from there, finishing in 2:02.86.  He had to hold off Gunnar Bentz, who had the fastest free split in the field at 28.32, but who couldn’t make up enough ground on Seliskar and touched 6th in 2:03.01.  Marko Blazebski(2:05.16) and day one 400 IM championship Sean Grieshop (2:07.23) placed 7th and 8th.

By the way I’m correcting something about Michael Phelps.
I’ve said a few days ago he was old now and would be 32 in Rio.
No, he will be 31 in Rio.

Bobo u are right about Adrian. He wasn’t fully tapered at the 2012 USOT which cost him a spot in the 50 free which was perhaps a blessing in disguise because he dropped 0.6 between the USOT and the OG. on the flip side margusson swam almost that much slower at the OG than he did at his trials. For the MP the only “competitive” event at the trials will be the 100 fly.

I think he will go around what he did at summer Nats at trials and have drops in Rio:
100 fly- 50.4-50.5
200 fly- 1:52.7-1:53.0
200 IM- 1:54.5-1:54.9

Rio:
50.1
1:52.3
1:53.8

Paolo, good analysis once again.

I don’t know if it makes a difference but the position of the earth during the 100 fly final in Omaha is ideal for heighten awareness and spirituality. If the finals timeline is the same as 2012 trails, the 100 fly final will be exactly 13:30 local sidereal time. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, fist bump… 😉

51 low would be just about sufficient to qualify but the thing is that Phelps will drop considerable time at the trials and qualify 1st in both flys. Prediction for trials

100 fly- 50.8
200 fly- 1:52.8
200 IM- 1:54.5

I repeat that times around 51.00 (100 fly), 1.54.00 (200 fly) and 1.56.00 (200 IM) will be enough.
That’s not a prediction of his times at trials. I also think he will go faster in all events.
It was just to show that he doesn’t need to peak in Omaha. And his coach know that very well.
He has no competition in both 200-meter events. No competition for the 2 spots. I don’t talk about the win here.
He has some little competition in the 100 fly with 2 or 3 guys who can go 51 low.
Paolo, you said what I always say. The key for the Americans who want to shine in Rio… Read more »

You can repeat as many times as you want, but if GOAT decides to break WR, he will do it, whenever, wherever, even in Olympics trials.

Is Dressel better then Chalmers?

Bobo, that 200 I’m time may be safe to make the American team, but if phelps only goes 51.low and 1:54 at American trials someone else may sneak in and take his spot on the team. My bets on he will go much. Faster though

Yes. No room for playing at Usa Olympic trials, and Phelps knows well that.

In 2008 OT, he swam a WR in an epic 400 im with Lochte (last turn and underwater in which Michael gained ground vs Ryan). Certainly, then in Beijing he improved all his swims, and I think that the target is always that: swimming at 90% at Omaha and at 100% at Rio.

About Bobo’s times, particularly 51 low in the 100 fly couldn’t be enough with guys like Shields, Conger and Phillips.
