In the very first final of Italy’s 2016 Italian National Championship meet, Simone Sabbioni has broken the Italian National Record in the men’s 100 meter backstroke.

In the final, he swam a 53.34, which skims just under his own record of 53.37 that was done in this same pool in December.

Sabbioni split his race almost identically to the way he did it in his prior personal best, which says that he’s honing-in on his race strategy.

Comparative Splits:

  • December Record 26.10/27.27 = 53.37
  • April Record: 25.97/27.38 = 53.34

That swim skims just under the 53.8 requisite qualification time for event winners at these National Championships, and so far he’s the only swimmer who’s earned a spot in the 100 back.

The swim doesn’t improve his standing in the current-season World Rankings, where he currently sits 11th. That will also retain him as the leadoff on Italy’s already-qualified 400 medley relay.
