Sunday at the Mayaguez International Swimming Open on the western coast of Puerto Rico, Daniel Ramirez took down a Mexican national record.
In the prelims of the 100 meter freestyle, Ramirez swam a 49.80 to lower his own Mexican national record.
Splits: 24.01 – 25.79 (49.80)
Ramirez took 21 hundredths off of his best time of 50.01, which was also the old record. Notably, this is the first time a Mexican swimmer has broken 50 seconds in the 100m free. That 50.01 time was swum recently, at the Orlando Pro Swim Series in early March.
In finals of the 100 free, Ramirez would finish first, but could not repeat his morning time. His 50.02 in finals was good enough for gold.
At the Mayaguez Open, Ramirez also finished 3rd in the 50 free (23.02). He time trialed a 50 free and registered a time of 22.96, a touch faster than his finals swim.
Way to go, Daniel!!! Congratulations, it is just the begging we hope to see more of your great speed and leg power! Always breaking up stereotypes & paradigms! Keep it up!

Yea!, not sure if Mexican-American Long Gutierrez have defined his swimming style and distance, his time on Butterfly does not correspond to its time on free style and he is a free style middle distance swimmer in his college. I hope he does very well in Rio…..

Indeed Mexican American Long Gutierrez broke 100 Free Mexican record in this same meet with a time of 50.09 secs, Mexican native and born Daniel Ramirez had this record 50.12 at that time. Now Daniel got it back breaking the barrier of 50 seconds with a 49.80, in Puerto Rico. Relay times are not valid on 2nd, 3rd, or 4th jumps, time on relay are valid only on starting swimmers!!!!! We need more Mexicans swimmers to break records and do “A” cuts for RIO-2016…….
