16 year old Mona McSharry collected three Irish titles on the final night of the Irish Open Swimming Championships. McSharry won the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke and also took the Irish title in the 50 freestyle.
McSharry won the 200 IM in a time of 2:19.27 and in the very next event took the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:32.74. She finished third in the 50 freestyle, but was the fastest Irish swimmer recording a time of 26.56.
Coming into the evening McSharry had already won titles in both the 50 and 100 breaststroke.
Brendan Hyland collected his third Irish title of the championships taking the men’s 100 butterfly in a time of 54.16. Hyland finished second to Nico Van Duijn of Switzerland who posted a 53.71. Hyland, who will be competing at the upcoming European Championships, also won the 400 IM and 200 butterfly earlier in the competition.
In the women’s event Shauna O’Brien finished first hitting the wall in a time of 1:00.51.
Shona Hickey, who won the women’s 800 freestyle earlier in the competition, took the Irish title in the 1500 freestyle hitting the wall in a time of 18:00.80. 14 year old Charlotte O’Riordan finished third in the event posting a time of 18:01.62.
Curtis Coulter won the men’s 50 freestyle in a time of 22.73. Coulter missed the qualifying time for the European Championships by three one-hundredths of a second.
The final chance for Irish swimmers to qualify for Rio will come at the European Championships, which begin in London on May 16th. Ireland currently has three athletes qualified for the Olympics and will have a team of 13 athletes competing in London.
