4 Houston area swimmers have been nominated for VYPE’s Houston female high school athlete of the year for 2015-2016
The magazine, which covers local high school athletics in different markets across the country, is accepting votes from their list of nominees until May 8th at 6PM.
Among the nominees are 4 area swimmers: Monica Gumina, Jaden Bellina, Lucie Nordmann, and Emma Stephenson. All four swimmers are underclassmen.
A brief bio on each swimmer is below:
- Monica Gumina, Sophomore, Woodlands – College Park – Monica Gumina was the 6A (big school) State Champion in the 100 free, which she swam in 50.21. She also placed 2nd in the 200 free in 1:47.27. She’s part of a stacked sophomore class of girls currently working their way through the Texas High School system. College Park placed 5th as a team.
- Jaden Bellina, Junior, Pearland High School – Bellina is the 2016 Texas 6A (big school) state champion in the 200 IM (1:59.81), which she won by a dominant 1.7 seconds over her next-closest competitor. She also took 3rd in the 100 fly in 54.47, and was part of an overall 16th-place team finish for the Pearland girls.
- Lucie Nordmann, Sophomore, The Woodlands – The only double state champion swimmer on the list, sophomore Lucie Normdann won both the 50 free (23.09) and the 100 back (53.34) at this year’s 6A (big school) championship meet. The Woodlands girls finished 2nd in the overall
- Emma Stephenson, Freshman, Stratford – The only 5A (small school) nominee in the group, Stephenson took state titles in the 100 fly (55.13) and 6th in the 50 free (24.03). She also split a 24.43 on the butterfly leg of Stratford’s winning 200 medley relay as her team took 2nd-place overall at the meet. Stratford will move to 6A next fall.
