Short reminder of German Olympic qualification procedure: The 2016 German National Championships are the first part of a two-step nomination procedure for the Olympic Games. The athletes had to swim defined times at National Championships in prelims and in finals. All swimmers who achieve the times will be part of the so-called “long list” and must inform German Head Coach Henning Lambertz in the period of one week after German Nationals in which meet they want to confirm the required performance of the nomination process: at one of the three meets of the Mare Nostrum tour or the German Open. They can only choose ONE of these four possibilities. For this meet, other times are set which are approximately 1,5 % slower than those at German nationals. All swimmers who reach the times and have also finished first or second at the German National Championships will qualify for Rio.

Women’s 100 m Freestyle
Nomination times: Prelims 55,08, Final 54,41

No German woman made it under the prelims standard. The German women’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay does not have a quota place for the Olympics. Germany’s Head Coach Henning Lambertz will check tonight’s time – the four fastest swimmers must reach together a 3:39,85 (addition of the single results). Then they will get a chance to compete in London at the European Championships to get under this relay cut for a possible participation in Rio.

Annika Bruhn is the 2016 German National Champion in the 100 free, she clocked a 54,94 for the win, followed by Anna Dietterle in 55,06 and Helen Scholtissek in 55.18 – all are faster than in prelims.

Men’s 100 m Freestyle
Nomination times: Prelims 49,12, Final 48,81

Damian Wierling clocked a new personal best in 48,54 for the win! Second place went to Björn Hornikel in 48,65 and  Paul Biedermann 48,65, followed by  Marco Di Carli in 48,89. Marius Kusch who was the top seed finished eight in 49,26.

Women’s 200 m Butterfly
Nomination times: Prelims 2:11,07, Final 2:09,16

Now it is up to Franziska Hentke – she is out very fast on the first 100 in 1:01,10. With a start-finish victory it is Hentke in 2:05,77 – that is the second fastest time in the world in this year. Martina van Berkel clocked a 2:08,50 for silver and bronze went to Julia Mrozinski in 2:10,87. Hentke said in a post race interview that she wanted to swim faster.

Men’s 200 m Butterfly
Nomination times: Prelims 1:58,20, Final 1:56,33

Alexander Kunert and Markus Gierke both must swim personal best to get a spot on the Rio long list. Kunert out in 55,49 – he really wants his ticket to Rio. And the winner is – Alexander Kunert in 1:57,11 a little bit slower than in the morning and  not under the Rio cut. Markus Gierke finished second in 1:57,68.

Women’s 100 m Breaststroke
Nomination times: Prelims 1:07,81, Final 1:07,32

Vanessa Grimberg is the German National Champion 2016 with a time of 1:07,91, this is a personal best time. Jessica Steiger clocked a 1:08,83 for silver and Laura Simon finished third in 1:09,34.

Men’s 100 m Breaststroke
Nomination times: Prelims 1:00,63, Final 1:00,01

Can Fabian Schwingenschloegl go under 1 minute? The 2016 NCAA Champion in the 100 yards breaststroke, trained by Mark Gangloff, is second at the 50 m turn and the win goes to: Marco Koch in 1:00,22 followed by Hendrik Feldwehr in 1:00,26 and Fabian Schwingenschloegl in 1:00,46. No one is under the nomination standard. Marco Koch is the swimmer for the 4 x 100 m medley relay in Rio with his win.

Women’s 200 m backstroke
Nomination times: Prelims 2:12,14, Final 2:10,39

Again a surprising result: Lisa Graf took the win in this Event in 2:08,98 – only swimmer under the qualification time. In second cam Nadine Laemmler in 2:10,49 and the clear favorite Jenny Mensing touched third in 2:10,63.

Men’s 200 m backstroke
Nomination times: Prelims 1:59,05, Final 1:58,02

No surprises in the 200 m back: Jan-Philip Glania and Christian Diener finished under the nomination time: Glania in 1:56,01 and Diener in 1:57,46. Mark Fischer picked up the bronze medal in 2:00,96.

Women’s 200 m IM
Nomination times: Prelims 2:14,12, Final 2:12,91

NEW GERMAN NATIONAL RECORDAlexandra Wenk finished in 2:11,33. Youngster Maxine Wolters reached in for the second place in 2:13,90, 1 second over the nomination time for this final. Katarzyna Baranowski won the bronze medal in 2:14,72. (She starts internationally for Poland.)

Men’s 200 m IM Nomination times:
Prelims 2:01,05, Final 1:59,64

Philip Heintz took the win in 1:58,31 – and get a spot on the long list with this performance. Philipp Forster clocked a 2:00,87 for silver followed by Kevin Wedel in 2:01,04.

I’ve just read the results and Wierling has swum a” Ledeckyian” 100 free: 23.9-24.6..
Massive back-half for the 20 year-old who I’ve watched two years ago at an European Junior Champ, and his talent was already clear.
Like Duncan Scott at British trials, Wierling has been stunning today at German trials: who swims nicely, will perform nicely (before or later..)

You really seem to be an expert! I think it was you who expected Wellbrock to qualify for Rio when i doubted him? Those two are very interesting swimmers in my opinion, they are both pretty young (Wellbrock is 18 and Wierling is 20) and are pretty “skinny”, so i hope that they will become even faster in the future.
Tomorrow he will swim 50 free, i hope that he will be able to swim the required time of 22.27.

Daniela, thanks for your recaps. Can you for day 4 mention the top 3 with the times in each event like that?
1.
2.
3.
Thanks.

I always wonder why USA struggles for a long time in women’s sprint but what can we say about the state of German women’s sprint? It’s really pathetic right now.
The fastest girl in the 100 free in 54.94….

Pretty decent times overall in most of other events.

Thomas, German medal chances in Rio?
Hentke in the women’s 200 fly?
Koch in the men’s 200 breast?
Biedermann in the men’s 200 free?
Other than that?

I told you that Wierling would be much faster than expected here, his entry times indicated that he would be able to swim sub 48.8, sub 22.20 and sub 1:48.

Women’s 100 free is very week in Germany right now, that being said Isabel Marie Gose born 2002 went 56.06 in the B final. A faint, very distant, sign of optimism at least…

Heidtmann in the 400m medley could surprise imo. His time was not great, because he had a flu earlier in the week, but i could imagine him swimming a 4:09. We’ll see if that’s enough for a medal.

But overall more than 2 medals would be very surprising.

Those 3 are the most realistic medal chances, then we also have some other athletes who might win a medal if everything works out perfectly for them:

Brandt (womens 50 free): We will see what she can do tomorrow, i hope for sub 24.50.

Köhler (womens 400/800 free): 4th in the world in womens 800 free and last year she improved by 5s from nationals to Kazan, which would bring her to 8:17 in Rio. I dont know if she can swim so fast, but i expect at least sub 8:20 if she remains healthy.

Wenk (womens 100 fly): She destroyed her 50 fly PB by about 0.4s and her 200 IM PB by more than 3s, i think she… Read more »

About womens 100 free:
You are absolutely right, although Wenk probably wouldve been able to swim faster than 54.85 (the winning time was 54.85 and not 54.94). I think by Rio all of our 4 girls would be able to swim faster than 55 flat start, but that still shouldnt be enough for the final and in my opinion our coach shouldnt send a relay at all, the same is true for all other relays on the womens side. We used to be better on the womens side, but now we are much better on the mens side. There is at least a bit of hope, if you look at the age of some of our fastest girls in… Read more »

I added Germany times of the relays..
Men time: Adds up to 3:14:73, 6th fastest time, little behind China who is 5th (3:14:56) and a little ahead of JPN (3:14:92)
Italy with Orsi back will probably be faster.. and with US germany will probably bethe 8th fastest.. China JPN Germany maybe Canada and GBR for 2 spots (Assuming Australia US Russia France Brazil and Italy are safe)
Women time: Adds up to 3:40:61, faster than they were last Worlds.. but can´t see them final..
Australia Netherlands Canada Sweden and US are safe for final.. France China Italy Japan Russia and Brazil for the last final spots..

Tomorrow I will calculate Germany chance to get a final again on medley relay..

Rafael our womens relay didnt even qualify for Rio so far and today they didnt swim the required time, so its very unlikely that we will send a relay to the european championships, were they wanted to qualify for Rio. At this point it would be very surprising to see the womens 400 free relay in Rio.
About mens 400 free relay: Our relay qualification is still not finished, those 4 athletes with the fastest time after the german open (beginning of July) will be nominated, so our individual times could become faster. Wierling (48.54), Biedermann (48.65) and Hornikel (48.65) should be safe, but not Di Carli who had only a time of 48.89. In my opinion Kusch could… Read more »

I’m very optimistic that all three relays of the men will qualify for the final, even though the added times are now slower than other nations.

For example last year the added time of the medley relay before the World Champs was only 3:36:78 and in the end they swam more than 4.5 seconds faster.

The 800 free relay should have no problem to qualify, we have a much better depth now and we can add Vogel to our relay. I think even with 4 out of Lebherz/Heidtmann/Zellmann/Wierling/Hintze we could reach the final.
Mens 400 free relay will be very close. France, USA, Australia, Russia and Brazil should be safe. I think China and Italy also will be faster, but we have a good chance to beat all other nations.
In mens medley relay we will probably be about 1s faster at 100 free/back. Glania should be about 0.5s faster than last year and Wierling is already more than 0.5s faster than everyone we had last year. Its difficult to tell how good… Read more »

Very shocked that Mesing didnt qualify, her time from this morning wouldve been fast enough, but i am not too surprised, she almost never gets her taper right, a bit like Feldwehr. Does two seem to be completely up and down. Also disappointed by Kunert and Wolters, i expected those 2 youngsters to qualify, but i hope that we wont nominate those two. The required times are very fair and Kunert/Wolters didnt really progress since last year, so they dont deserved to qualify. Wierling was amazing, Wenk as well. We should have a very young team in Rio and almost all of them should be able to reach the final.

I have the same opinion about Mensing like you. She’s from the era of german swimmers who swim their best times at nationals, which is actually something that Lambertz tries to avoid. But she has still good chances in the 100back, at least as a relay member. I’m a bit sad for Wolters who is just 17 years of age. Kunert on the contrary is already 20 year and has the experience of a world championship. Not sure why he didn’t evolved since last year. Wierling is a great talent. I hope he keeps getting better, Germany needs new 100 freestylers. And last but not least: I am so excited to see what she’s got in her main distance the… Read more »

I agree, i expect 56 high from Wenk. Some youngsters have made a great progression (Wierling, Wellbrock, Hintze), but others have disappointed (Kunert, Wolters, Mrozinski, Beck). I dont think that Mensing will qualify in 100 back and i think we shouldnt nominate any relay on the womens side.

At the moment i would be happy with the following team:
Brandt, Köhler, Beck, Graf (100 back), Wenk, Hentke, (Schmidtke), Grimberg (200 breast), Wierling, Biedermann, Di Carli, Hornikel, Vogel, Rapp, (Zellmann), Lebherz, Heidtmann, Wellbrock, Hintze, Diener, Glania, Deibler, Feldwehr, Koch, Vom Lehn, Heintz

Mens 400 free relay: Biedermann, Wierling, Di Carli, Hornikel
Mens 800 free relay: Biedermann, Vogel, 2 out of Rapp/Wierling/Heidtmann/Zellmann/Hintze/Lebherz
Mens medley relay: Glania, Feldwehr, Deibler,… Read more »

But Damian won’t swim the 200 m free. And I think the rules don’t allow to put him into the relay. Or am I wrong? It is the same in the 4 x 100 Freestyle relay: Only those swimmers who swam today could make the team. And Lambertz will choose the four who are the fastest until German Open!

Wierling will be in Rio anyway and it would be stupid to not put him in the relay if he is among our 4 fastest guys by then (which is very well possible in my opinion). You also shouldnt forget that he had a time of 49.65 at 2014 nationals and then went on to swim 49.07 at youth olympic games in Nanjing, so i think there is a good chance that he will be even faster in Rio if he stays healthy.

But Wierling won’t swim the 200 tomorrow and Lambertz surely won’t nominate for the 4x200m relay just because he improved in the 100m freestyle.

I know that he wont swim it, you dont have to repeat it 100 times, i already discussed about it with Daniela on Friday or Thursday. Lets say he swims sub 1:48 at the german open, do you think that he will be left out if he is among the 4 fastest guys at this point? No one would have a problem if we would use him for the 800 free relay prelims, because we can nominate our relay as planned and then if we see that Wierling is faster than those guys we can still use him for the relay, because he will be in Rio anyway. Of course he wont be nominated tomorrow, but it would be stupid… Read more »

Not going to lie, expected a whole lot more in the men’s 100 breast, particularly from Schwingenschloegl. Admittedly for Koch it is all about the 200…..

I didn’t expect more from Koch or Feldwehr, but Schwingenschloegl was so confident about swimming a 59.

I expected to individual starters in the 100 breast apart of Koch. At least for the medley relay nothing changed, because Koch surely can swim a low 59 in the relay.

Me too, the crazy thing is that Feldwehr and Koch are both clearly faster than last year. Feldwehr was at 1.00.65 last year at the same meet and then went on to swim 59.6 in Kazan, Koch was at 1.00.5 at the same meet last year. I hope that Feldwehr will be safed for the medley relay, i am sure that he will then swim sub 1.00.00 in Rio.

Not sure about Feldwehr. He always delivers in the relay, but then disappoints in the individual events.

I think Feldwehr would be a better option for the relay, he will swim 59 low in the relay.

Hentke doesnt look to satisfied with her time of 2:05.77. I understand it, she set a huge new PB at 400 IM and wanted to swim a new german record today (sub 2.05.26).

2.08.50 for Martina van Berkel from Switzerland, she should have qualified for Rio with that time.

Very good result in mens 100 free (for a german standard)
Wierling (born in 1996) with huge new Pb 48.54 (previous PB was 49.07)
Biedermann/Hornikel with 48.65
Di Carli with 48.89
Last year no german guy was sub 49, now we have 4
No one officially qualified, but i am sure that Wierling and Hornikel will be allowed to swim this event individually in Rio.
