2016 CIF-SS Division IV Prelims: Cerritos Poised to Repeat B&G Titles

The CIF-Southern Section Division IV (smaller schools) prelims concluded on Wednesday afternoon with Cerritos boys and girls poised to repeat as Section champions. Although Cerritos had no event leaders in either the girls’ meet or the boys’ meet, they managed to place at least one swimmer in the A final of nearly every event. Barring disqualification, both the Cerritos girls’ and boys’ teams will score in every swimming final on Friday afternoon.

In the girls’ meet, Beaumont, Foothill Tech and Rowland also had strong morning performances and should score in all but one or two swimming finals. The boys’ meet was more evenly distributed, but Beaumont, Buckley, Jurupa Valley, Notre Dame of Riverside, Quartz Hill, and San Dimas all placed swimmers in most events.

Girls’ Meet

Alta Loma had a huge morning, picking up almost 90 points over the psych sheet, including a first-place qualifying time for junior Mia Bailey in the 200 free (1:56.28). La Salle senior Jacqueline Torrez led the field in the 200 IM (2:07.55) and 100 breast (1:06.20). Victoria Kirshner, a junior at Santa Clarita Christian, posted the top qualifying times in the 50 free (24.29) and 100 free (52.54). Vistamar sophomore Keiko Derikoletis will be the one to beat in the 100 fly (58.23) and 500 free (5:16.55). Maranatha senior Summer Otazu went 57.41 in the 100 back to lead by 3.6 seconds.

In addition, Cerritos led the field in the 200 medley relay (1:52.51) and 400 free relay (3:44.04), while Rowland led the way in the 200 free relay with 1:44.32.

Sophomore Michelle Lee of Fairmont scored 443.15 points in the one-meter diving final to put the first points on the board. Whittier Christian freshman Sidney Wright was second (335.60) and Maranatha junior Sabina Lewis, third (333.00).

Boys’ Meet

Notre Dame of Riverside dropped over 6 seconds to lead the field in the 200 medley relay with 1:40.95. heading into Friday’s final. San Dimas took nearly 3 off their seed time in the 200 free relay to notch a leading 1:28.94. And Beaumont’s 3:16.69 earned them the right to lane 4 for the final of the 400 free relay.

Beaumont also had some strong individual performances, notably from junior Paul Goetz who was the top qualifier in the 50 free with 21.29 and the 100 free with 46.81. Fairmont had several leading times: senior Evan Munaretto in the 200 free (1:42.14) and 500 free (4:39.92), and senior Edgar Chin in the 200 IM (2:00.40) and 100 breast (55.72). Chin broke the Division IV meet record with his prelims swim. La Salle sophomore James Torrez is top qualifier in the 100 fly (52.39) and 100 back (52.05).
