Grant Shoults, a senior at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, broke two national high school records at the CIF-Southern Section Division I finals in Riverside, California. SwimSwam’s Anne Lepesant caught up with Shoults at the end of the meet to talk about his last high school meet and the two record-breaking races. You can read about those records here (200 free) and here (500 free).
Shoults was ready for the 200 free, excited to see what he could do just hours after Maxime Rooney had thrown down the gauntlet by breaking Tom Shields’ 2009 record by 13/100 with 1:33.70 at the CIF-NCS championships in Northern California. Shoults was on fire from the start and the atmosphere at the Riverside Aquatic Center was electric. As he headed for home the crowd was on its feet and erupted when he touched at 1:33.26.
The 500 free was just as exciting. Shoults was holding 25s and it was clear that he would at least rattle the record. When he hit the wall at 4:12.87 the Riverside Aquatic Center exploded. Shoults had done it again. Two swims, two national records.
Grant is a classy, humble, hard working, talented young man who is going to take on the world!
