The Olympic torch continues it’s tour of Brazil, heading through the state of Minas Gerais recently.
On Friday the torch Inhotim, home of 50 free Olympic qualifier Italo Manzine who received the honor of carrying the torch. Manzine famously edged out 2008 Olympic champion Cesar Cielo for the second Brazilian spot on the Olympic team in the 50 free.
Other carriers of the torch over the weekend included Rene Santana, the son of Telê Santana who was the coach of the Brazilian national football teams at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.
“For me, it was a huge honour to represent, in our lovely town of Itabirito, someone who has done so much for sport, as my father, did”, said Renê.
Two-time Pan American judo gold medalist Luciano Corrêa also got the honor of being a torchbearer on Friday in Itabirito.
“It’s is an opportunity to show the people of Itabirito the importance of the Olympic Games and the Olympic spirit,” said Luciano.
The torch started in Contagem before heading to Minas Gerais state capital Bela Horizonte, where it was handled by some of Brazil’s most famous volleyball players including Sheilla Castro.
“It is a truly unique feeling. I was very keen to carry the Olympic flame. The Torch Relay is a beautiful thing and I’m pleased to be part of it,” said Sheila.
The torch eventually made its way to Juiz de Fora on Sunday and will be taking on six more cities beginning Monday throughout three states: Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.
