Koski was edged out buy Guy James from Great Britan (1:46.42) who took third in the race. Sebastian Verschuren took the event in a time of 1:46.02, followed closely by Velimir Stjepanovic (1:46.26).

The previous Finnish National Record was held by Antti Kasvio, who won a bronze medal in the 200 free at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. At the 1994 World Aquatics Championships in Rome, Kasvio won the world title in the 200 free and took home a silver in the 400 free. He also still holds the 400 free (3:47.81) Finnish National Record.

Matias Koski swam for the Georgia Bulldogs, winning the 1,650 free at NCAA Championships in 2015, his junior year, and placed 2nd in the 200 free at NCAAs in 2016, his senior year. Koski qualified for the 2012 London Olympic Games and swam the 200 free, 400 free, and 1500 free, but failed to qualify for finals in any of his events.

On the men’s side, Koski will join Ari-Pekka Liukkonen (50 free) and Matti Mattsson (200 breast) on the Finnish Olympic Team to compete at Rio this summer.

Koski came in 11th place in the 400 free (3:50.02) at European Championships on day 1 and will swim the 100 freestyle tomorrow.
