Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu had no problem handling the field in the 400 IM on the first finals session of the Romanian International Swimming Championships in Bucharest last night.

After swimming a 4:36.92 in prelims, taking the top time by over twenty seconds, Hosszu charged to a time of 4:34.14 to take the win. This comes after her impressive showing at the 2016 European Championships of 4:30.90 to win the gold just ten days ago. Finishing 2nd in that race was Romanian youngster Maria Gadea with a 4:57.52.

Romanian Robert Glinta, who set national records in both the 50 and 100 backstroke events at the recent Euro Champs, swam a 25.69 to take the 50 back title. Algerian Melih Amel just edged out Romanian Carina Macavei on the women’s side, 29.77 to 29.91.

Bogdan Fodor swam a 4:30.90 to grab a win in the men’s 400 IM. Hosszu, meanwhile, was so dominant in her race that she would have placed 2nd in the men’s 400 IM final at this meet.

Romania swept the 100 fly, with Alexandra Dobrin taking the women’s event in 1:03.04 and Alexandru Coci swimming a 53.81 to take the men’s race.

In the final event of the session, Baia Mare won the mixed 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.85, powered by a 52.33 lead-off leg from Nas Mihal. 2nd went to Dinamo Bucharesti in 3:43.67, getting a 56.28 leg from Ionela Cozma.
