Some Brazilian Olympians competed in their home country in the city of Belo Horizonte as they prepare for a home Olympics coming up in August. The competition was a short course 25 metre event called the Supercopa MG held on May 27th and 28th at the Minas Tennis Club in Belo Horizonte.
Olympian Nicolas Oliveira was the top performer of the meet, winning three events in some very quick times. Oliveira picked up wins in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles in times of 21.66, 46.98 and 1:43.19. All three swims place him at the top of the world rankings for the calendar year, as the last big short course meets were contested in November and December of 2015. Oliveira will compete in the 100 and 200 freestyle in Rio, along with both freestyle relays.
The top swim on the women’s side was Lorraine Ferreira’s 50 free, taking the win in 25.05. She also won the 100 free in 55.23.
Along with Oliveira there were two other Olympians competing: Henrique Martins and Italo Duarte. Martins won both the 50 (23.74) and 100 fly (52.22), and also swam the 100 free (49.56) and 50 free (22.46). Duarte competed in the 50 free (22.42), 100 free (50.34), and 50 fly (25.41). Martins is slated to swim the 100 fly and the medley relay in Rio, while Duarte will swim the 50 free as he was the one to take out Cesar Cielo for the second Olympic spot behind Bruno Fratus.
