The top two seeds from the women’s 400 IM, Texas’s Madisyn Cox and Georgia’s Annie Zhu, both have scratched the event, leaving 17-year-old Regan Barney as the top seed in a six-person field consisting entirely of teenagers.
The men’s 400 IM has also seen multiple scratches as 7th-seed Basil Orr of Dynamo, 10th seed Nick Milikich of Nitro, 12th seed Brenden Feehery of Lakeside, and 13th seed Jared Butler all dropped the event. With those changes, Singapore and Texas’s Rio-bound Joseph Schooling moves up into the A final, and Tigershark Swim Team’s Hayden Henry is left on his own in the B final.
6th seed Tasija Karosas has dropped the 200 free, which allows Joanna Evans to move up into the championship final. 12th Quinn Carrozza and 13th Margo Geer have both scratched as well, along with 15th Rachel Zilinska of the Athens Bulldogs. With those changes, Easop Lee of NBAC, Lisa Boyce of Longhorn, and Sammie Hashbarger move up into the B final. 23rd Brooke Hansen has scratched as well.
20th Sean Grieshop is out of the men’s 200 free, along with 23rd Pace Clark and 24th Tate Jackson. Those scratches negate the need for a swim off between North Texas’s Colter Carman and Cory Loria, and they allow North Texas’s Gus Karau into the C final.
6th-ranked Regan Barney scratched the 200 back, presumably to focus on the 400 IM, allowing Austin Swim Club 15-year-old Kendall Shields to move into the championship final.
17th Nick Milikich of Nitro has scratched the men’s 200 back.
There are no scratches in the women’s 50 free, and 20th-ranked Matthew Ellis is out of the C final of the men’s 50 free.
Phelps lost steam around 125m. Sigh. Townley swam a great race with lousy wall work, similar to NCAAs. If he could just learn to turn and kick underwater!
All these scratches everywhere are boring.
