The U.S. Olympic Trials – Swimming will host the Omaha Cup in a two-day meet format on the 17th and 18th of June. That’s one weekend before the start of the official Trials.
All of the same events that will take place at the Olympic Trials are to be contested at the Omaha Cup, with the events split up between the two days.
Swimmers registered with USA Swimming who have earned qualification times (which can be viewed in the meet info link above) may enter the meet, and any eligible swimmer with a qualification cut can enter up to two bonus events in which they meet the bonus qualification standards.
The focus here is on swimmers from around Omaha, so the meet entries will first be limited to qualifiers from Midwestern Swimming, and then qualifiers from other LSC’s will be added. The desired cap is 400 swimmers, which is a little less than 1/4 of the total number of qualifiers for the Olympic Trials. USA Swimming has a page here with more information about the 1600+ OT qualifiers thus far.
At the 2012 version of this meet, which was called the “2012 Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational” at the time, Kevin Cordes broke a 17-18 NAG record with a 1:01.23 in the 100m breast. That took down Brendan Hansen‘s 17-18 record. Cordes would go on to just miss the Olympic team in the 100 breast at Trials a weekend later, but finished the summer with NAG records in the 100 and 200m breaststrokes. He is now considered one of the favorites for a spot on the Olympic team in both breaststrokes.
