Uruguay Set to Send Two Swimmers to Rio

Last week Uruguay Best Swimming reported that Uruguay will be sending Ines Remersaro and Martin Melconian to represent the country in the pool at the Rio Olympic Games.

This will be the same number of athletes that represented the nation in London.

Remersaro will be competing in her second straight Olympics. The 23 year old, who attends the Oklahoma Baptist University, finished 43rd in the 100 backstroke in London. Melconian will be participating in his first Olympic Games following in his brother Gabriel’s footsteps who competed at the 2012 Olympics.

Remersaro currently holds the national records in the 100 (1:04.54) and 200 backstroke (2:19.01) as well as the 100 freestyle (58.02). Melconian holds the national records in the 50 (27.85) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.23).

The two will be coached by Javier Golovchenko who represented Uruguay at the 1996 Olympics in London.

Last year Uruguay sent four swimmers to the World Championships in Kazan, which included Remersaro who finished 47th in the 100 backstroke and 40th in the 200 backstroke and Melconian who finished 39th in the 50 breaststroke. The other two swimmers to compete in Kazan were Gabriel Melconian and Sofia Usher.

The nation has competed at 14 Olympic Games with only one athlete reaching the finals. That swimmer was Ana Maria Norbis finished eighth in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
