Day one of the Barcelona Mare Nostrum stop got underway this morning with 15 events.
Known for her multiple starts, Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu competed in the 400 m IM, 100 m backstroke, scratched the 50 m free, finished “only” 9th after prelims in the 100 m fly in 59,52 and clocked a 1:58,80 in the 200 m freestyle, the fifth fastest time in women’s 200 m free prelims. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom set a new meet record in the 100 m fly in 57,14, she also finished with the fastest time in the 50 m free in 24,63 and qualified with the second fastest time in the 200 m freestyle in 1:59,01.
Some German swimmers didn’t show up this morning in Barcelona: Dorothea Brandt and Damian Wierling scratched their starts.
On the men’s side, Andriy Govorov set a new meet record in the 50 m butterfly in 23,27. World record holder Adam Peaty showed a fast swim with a 59,63 in the 100 m breaststroke. He was the only swimmer under 1 minute this morning. Cameron van der Burgh, who was in the start list for this race, did not swim.
Japan’s Kosuke Hagino finished first in the 200 IM in 1:58,51. Like Katinka Hosszu in her IM races, it seems easy for him to deliver fast times – always 2016 Top Ten performances.
