Brazilian Athlete Shot In The Head During Rio Carjacking

Just 55 days out from the 2016 Olympic Games opening ceremony, another violent crime is making headlines in host city Rio de Janeiro. Last month we reported how 3 members of the Spanish Olympic sailing team were robbed at gunpoint in Santa Teresa, an area of Rio. This week, a Brazilian competitive shooter was shot in the head in a carjacking attempt in the northern part of the city.

Anna Paula Cotta was shot on Thursday, June 9th while driving her car in northern Rio. In an attempt to steal her car, the perpetrators shot Cotta as she she tried to escape, reportedly firing off several shots. 27-year-old Cotta, a member of Brazil’s Navy, is currently hospitalized and is listed in serious condition.

As a pistol specialist, Cotta vied for an Olympic berth on Brazil’s competitive shooting team, but missed out. She was scheduled to participate in a Brazilian Championship shooting event today, June 11th.

“An examination of the site was carried out. Officers are looking for (camera) images and carefully searching the area to gather necessary evidence for the investigation,” the civil police force said in a statement.

According to Yahoo News, between the months of January and April of 2016, murders within host city Rio were up nearly 16% from the same time frame in 2015.

Enough of being “fair” and letting all countries get a shot at hosting the games. Some countries just aren’t safe and shouldn’t host world wide attended events. Maybe I sound politically incorrect, but its true. Maybe we can let Iraq host 2020. They deserve a chance, right??
