Ireland Sending Three Swimmers to Compete in Rio

Swim Ireland announced today that Fiona Doyle, Shane Ryan and Nicholas Quinn will represent the nation at the Rio Olympic Games.

The three made the team in three different venues. Doyle qualified at the World University Games where she won a bronze in the women’s 100 breaststroke posting a time of 1:07.15. Ryan became the first Irish swimmer to qualify for the games on home soil posting a 53.93 in the 100 backstroke at the Dave McCullagh Meet in Bangor. Quinn qualified for the team in the 200 breaststroke posting a time of 2:11.24 at the Eindhoven Swim Cup.

The three have just finished a two week training camp in Barcelona, which ended with their participation in the Mare Nostrum event last weekend. Doyle finished fourth in the 50 breaststroke recording a 31.74 while Ryan put up a 54.71 in the 100 backstroke which also placed him fourth.

All three are now training in their home settings and will reconvene in Uberlandia, the Irish training base, on July 25th for a two week camp before heading to Rio.

“Ireland can be very proud of this group of athletes going to Rio. They have worked extremely hard to achieve this goal and I know they all have high expectations on themselves going into the Games to represent Ireland to the highest possible level,” said Peter Banks, Swim Ireland’s High Performance Director.

Ireland sent four swimmers to the 2012 Olympic Games in London and sent a team of four to Kazan last summer to compete in the World Championships, a team that included Doyle.
