16-year old Olivia Calegan of the Greatern Nebraska Swim Teampicked up a pair of victories on Friday during the front-half of the two-day Omaha Cup. The meet is being hosted at the CenturyLink center in the Olympic Trials pool as a test event, albeit an intentionally lower-key one than has been employed in prior years.
First, in the 100 breaststroke final, Calegan swam a 1:09.61 to win. That’s her best time by six-tenths of a second and the first time she’s been under 1:10.
She doubled that up with a later victory in the 50 free, where she swam a 25.97 – her first time better than 26 seconds.
Those two events are the two in which she’s qualified for the Olympic Trials that start next weekend.
On the boys’ side, the highlight of the night was 15-year old Jack Dolan of the Rockwood Swim Club. He won the men’s 100 backstroke by almost a second, swimming a 56.81 in the final.
That gives Dolan his first Olympic Trials qualifying swim, dropping under the standard by three-tenths of a second.
He was also the fastest swimmer in the 100 free prelims (51.40) before scratching to focus on the 100 backstroke in finals. That 100 free was won by Ryan Bubb, a former swimmer at Ohio State who’s now competing as a coach at Heartland Aquatics. Bubb’s winning time was a 51.18, which is his lifetime best.
Michael Andrew didn’t compete on day 1 of the meet, but is scheduled for the 100 breast and 50 free on Saturday.

- Men’s 400 free – Scott Bergstrom, Hock River Valley Swim Team, 4:05.32
- Men’s 200 breast – Phillip Willett, Unattached – 2:20.86
- Women’s 200 back – Jacqueline Jeschke, Nebraska – 2:18.20
Yes. Andrew will break the minute at trials. But to qualify he needs to much faster.
Interesting to see Jack Dolan. I don’t know if he swims the 50 and 100 free this week but he’s one of the most promising young US sprinters.
I shudder to think what you will call Andrew if he does not break the minute at the trials.
