Michael Andrew won a pair of events on night 2 of the Omaha Cup, setting one new 17-18 National Age Group record.
Andrew went 1:00.37 to win the 100 breast and break the NAG record for the second time in a day. In prelims, he was 1:00.46.
Later in the night, Andrew was 22.65 to win the 50 free by almost half a second. That’s about three tenths off his lifetime-best in that race.
The latter race yielded two new Olympic Trials cut behind Andrew. Heartland Aquatics 24-year-old Ryan Bubb went 23.05 to set a new lifetime-best and earn an Olympic Trials cut. Bubb, a former Ohio State Buckeye, hadn’t been under 23.4 since 2009.
And behind him, Wyoming’s Kyle White cut his best from a 23.65 down to a 23.21, sneaking under the Trials cut by .08 seconds.
One of the night’s best swims on the women’s side came from rising Nebraska Husker senior Erin Oeltjen in the 100 back. Oeltjen dropped four tenths off her lifetime-best to go 1:02.76 – that’s more than half a second under the Olympic Trials cut, though Oeltjen was already qualified for the big show before this weekend.
Hood River Valley Swim Team’s Scott Bergstrom earned his second win of the week, going 1:54.03 to win the 200 free. Bergstrom won the 400 free on day 1.
Also adding a second win was Jordan Stout of Rockwood Swim Club. The 18-year-old was 4:25.70 to win the 400 free after winning the 200 last night.
Other winners on day 2:
- Girls 400 IM: Anna McDonald, Club Huskers – 5:01.94
- Girls 100 free: Taryn Collura, Club Huskers- 57.09
- Boys 100 fly: Ryan Bubb, Heartland Aquatics- 55.22
- Girls 100 back: Erin Oeltjen, Club Huskers – 1:02.76
- Girls 200 fly: Brecken Merkel, Edina – 2:20.60
- Boys 200 IM: Griffin Back, Edina – 2:08.53
- Girls 200 breast: Haley Downey, Splash Club, Inc. – 2:35.93
- Boys 200 back: Peter Larson, Edina – 2:04.62
Anyone know where Michael will ultimately go to college? He would be a great fit at Berkeley, USC or Florida.
Also Edina’s Brecken Merkel won 200FL, not 100BK…
Jared – The 2IM winner, Griffin Back, swims for Aquajets Swim Team, not Edina. Also Edina’s Peter Larson made the 200BK OT cut in the morning!
Way to go Bubb! Adding another Buckeye to the list! See you in Omaha!
And well done to Michael Andrew.
Way to go Erin and Bubb!
Way to go coach Ryan, doing HLA proud!
