The Italian open water swimmers swept the FINA/HOSA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Balatonfüred, Hungary today. Simone Ruffini took the top honors on the men’s side in 1:50:26, while Rachele Bruni won the women’s event in 1:59:59.
Ruffini, who scored seventh in this event at last year’s FINA World Championships, took the win in a close race against Andreas Washburger of Germany, Richard Weinberger of Canada, and the USA’s Sean Ryan. Ruffini, Weinberger, and Ryan will all be competing in this event in Rio.
Meanwhile, Bruni came in 11 seconds ahead of the field, outswimming the United States’ Haley Anderson, Germany’s Isabelle Harle, Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha. Bruni finished fourth at the FINA World Championships in Kazan last year, securing her place on the psych sheet for Rio.
