Bethany Galat of Texas A&M is the only scratch for tonight’s day 2 finals at U.S. Olympic Team Trials. This morning, she qualified 14th in women’s 100 breaststroke with 1:08.46.
Since she dropped the event for tonight, the University of Minnesota’s postgrad Haley Spencer will swim the semifinal. This morning, she swam 1:08.56. Spencer was the NCAA champion in the 200 breaststroke in 2011.
Galat finished third in the 400 IM yesterday with 4:37.69, coming in behind first-time Olympic qualifier Maya DiRado (4:33.73) and likely third-time Olympic qualifier Elizabeth Beisel (4:36.81).
Tonight’s competition will feature the finals of the women’s 100 fly, the men’s 100 breast, and the women’s 400 free. Semifinals tonight will include the men’s 200 free, the women’s 100 breast, the men’s 100 back, and the women’s 100 back. Katie Ledecky, Ryan Lochte, Missy Franklin, Natalie Coughlin, and a whole host of American swimming talent will be in action.

Any reason why she scratched?
She is seeded 8th in the 200 IM. She must think she has a better shot at making the team there. After placing 3rd in the 400 IM, it probably makes a lot of sense to go all in for the 200 IM.
